    Hi lads.

Has anyone ever ran the blessington road(n81)? Is it safe/advisable if wearing high viz n running in daylight?

    Thoughts and advise is appreciated.

Narrow in places with no footpath and a lot of trucks. I'd avoid it if possible.

I often see people running along there when cycling...the worst part would be up the embankment, the start of it going from Jobstown where traffic and cyclists can come down fast. It'd be a terrible boring run. :)

Thanks lads. Similar feelings to myself but wasn't sure if some run it regularly and give it the ok.

I ended up running a stretch if that road by accident one day, very busy, lots of lorries, not much of a shoulder. There seem to be a lot of smaller country roads not far off it, and only a stones throw to nice, quiet scenic running in the mountains, so you could find some nice, alternative routes in the area.

Where are you trying to get to, Tallaght to Blessington ? You could avoid the worse of it from the bend just before the Embankment by heading into Saggart there and taking the left at the crossroads and head up Slade Valley. Pretty decent hill to run up, bit more scenic and quieter and you pop out just before Brittas.

From then on as RacoonQueen said it's pretty boring, even if you were cycling it. So what you could do then is run into Brittas and take the right towards Manor Kilbride and down the other side of the lakes into Blessington. Might be worth a drive to see if you're comfortable with running that road, or to get familiar with the route.

Run on some of it occasionally but the more I do the less I want to...its a dangerous road as Thisregard says there is sections you can do to avoid it if you really want to.

Yeah I know the road ur talking about. Just thinking of running from work towards blessington was all. N wasn't sure if the road was suitable. Do people think the back roads or quieter roads be safer? Sometimes the cars drive as quick n literally only the space for 2 cars

I live out there and run that way a good bit. I prefee the Saggart way. You can turn off at the golf course but the road isn't as smooth as the main n81. I tend to run it when traffic is quiet because it is dangerous.

Thanks wolf!! Wouldn't be a regular thing just the odd occasional run.
