What should I grow veg / fruits in?

This may sound ridiculous but what are others using as a medium for growing? Ive never grown anything but wanted to start this year to show the small fella. I, currently using top soil and compost about 50/50 I havent a clue if thats what im supposed to be using. Im also assuming i cant just go to a forest and fill buckets…

I havent a clue if thats what im supposed to be using. Im also assuming i cant just go to a forest and fill buckets of soil?? Im going to start a composter this year also - for next year. Can I grow using just the contents of that next year?
