Opinions welcome - vinyl panels

Inspired by another poster, I've been toying with the idea of putting black vinyl on the rear panels of the landcruiser. Obviously it wont look as good as tinted glass, but its basically the type of look I'm going for, without the expense of refitting glass panes.

    Now:

    Wildly photoshopped potential future:

So would the vinyl look horrendous up close? I'd be confident enough of getting a decent finish on it doing it myself. Just haven't seen much of the vinyl finish first hand.. thoughts?

    Thanks, Bob:)

Nah, it'd be grand, just don't go too glossy.
Very dark grey as opposed to black.

I would have thought black would be the better option to look more like glass than a dark grey, even if it is very very very dark grey...I'd have to look at samples from a supplier.

My son did it to a Pug 307 commercial.
We do a bit of vinyl signage on the side, but this was slightly tricky as the panel was very slightly convex and it's awkward to get the vinyl on a double-curvature without getting a crease.
A heat gun (or even a hair dryer) helps to soften the vinyl enough to remove any creases.

....and Black is the only colour to go for, anything else will just look wrong.
