How much do you save?

Are you a saver or a spender? Do you regularly save? How much and how much compared to what you earn? I'm in my mid 30's and only really properly saving now. In the past I'd save a few grand but then it would go on something. Because my earnings fluctuate considerably month to month its hard to budget. However in times I have had money and spent it stupidly instead of saving or investing. Really regret not saving more in my early years. I'd always see if I had anything left over at the end of the month and try to save that - but you always spend what you have. Now I save at the start of the month and stick to that. I'll have 10k saved next month and that's done in a year. Still a long way off my goal. I wish I had of done started saving properly years ago!

I'm same age as you and probably same situation I earned a decent amount when I was in my 20s and blew it all but I have been with my partner since i was 22 and we both enjoyed ourselves we have had a great 10 year but only since we had our child near 3 year ago and getting married this year have we started saving, were doing well at it manage to save a grand a month that's gonna pay for wedding then next year we gonna focus on our nest egg so to speak,
Anyway i suppose in short id day don't regret not saving you are still at an age where you can make your later years when you retire very comfortable in my opinion but you still have to enjoy life when you can.

Don't waste your money on an extravagant wedding.
    Ceremony, nice meal with family & friends & a holiday. €5k - €7k max.
Anything more than that and you will both look back later and regret the waste.
Focus on your nest egg and providing a great upbringing and education for your children.

  • I used to save €250 a month. I've recently taken a job that pays quite a lot less than my old job so I can't really afford to save anything now. 5% of my gross salary goes into my pension every month so that's saving I guess.

I try to save between 250 and 500 a month, but the last few months have been bad on that front because I have a huge holiday coming up and thats eating into all of my wages. Im planning to get it back to 500euros a month when I return. :P

25% of salary goes directly into a savings account each month.
2% of salary towards pension fund.

After that, anything that I don't spend in the month stays sitting in my current account.

I usual try and set short term goals (1 to 3 years) and save up to a third of salary. Might not succeed but at least some form of a mark to measure on.

Its by no means extravagant but it will be nice I don't see how could do it for 5 to 7 grand max tho ha, ours coming in about 11 I'm happy with that.

No set amount but a few hundred per month. It doesn't be long adding up and nice to know the money is there as a back up if/when it's needed.
Would like to have a higher interest rate for my savings account though.
