Anyone know where to get one of these? Bricks and mortar, not online. Don't say try your local motor factors - because I've tried 3 already.

    6 pointed 36mm shallow socket.
Apparently the MINI housing cap is prone to breaking so it would be nice to get the proper tool rather than bodging it.

Where are you based? I have one in my glovebox...got it on Amazon.co.uk a couple of years back, but you're welcome to a lend of it if you're around South Dublin.

Any 36mm socket will do, inc impact sockets

They have a 36mm 6 point socket but not a shallow one which might be even more important in the MINI compared to other applications. :-(

I was gonna chance an old headset spanner from a push bike if I couyld dig it out, but worried now after hearing stories of people breaking them...

Edit, yes, they have a couple of those impact sockets in local Halfords. I've taken mental note of the size so I must have a look at her car later and judge the access.

Hmmm, I suspect this "breakage" that the motor factors talked of refered to the internal plastic cage that the early ones have.
Can't see how the housing cap would break. Cross thread if you were an ape or strip if the previous person was an ape maybe.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I can confirm that the halford impact socket works. No issues with clearance.

However, you will need a 1/2 inch ratchet to use it or a tiny breaker bar. An average 1/2 inch breaker bar is too big to turn in there except to break the seal. (R50 mini cooper)

My ratchets are all 3/8 or 1/4 so I was lucky that there was just enough space for the coarse ratchet on a lidl torque wrench to work.

Did I find the magic plastic insert? Nope. Long gone I'd say. What effect does this have? Who knows - but why would BMW have changed the cap when doing away with the plastic insert. That is, I think I should have the new housing with the new cap, or the old housing with the old cap and the plastic insert. Not the in between option I have now. Oh well.
