Whats a good time / weather for sowing grass

Hi, I'm sure this has been dine loads but wondering what the ideal conditions for sowing grassseed. Just sowing patches and along a few hedges. I can borrow a chain harrow but no roller. What would be the best method to do this. Thanks in advance
