The 325 with the 3 litre is the N53 engine. It's a nice engine when it's working, but my own advise is to stay away. If you're lucky, it'll only cost you 6 injectors and 6 coil packs (more than once!) and possibly an oil pump. If you're unlucky, it'll ruin you! I don't think the 4 cylinder petrols post September 07 are any better. The diesels are the ones with the timing chain issue.

Ok so would you recommend the 320 over 325 !

I didn't realise the 6 cylinders of that era were that troublesome...

I read some warnings about them before I bought one, then I found out first hand! I still get nightmares with that BMW "bong". They should just include a € symbol with the engine management symbol to be honest!

To be honest, no, an Aunt of mine had one of similar vintage and it broke her heart too, some inside warranty, some outside.

Yeah so the dream is gone don't think I can take the risk on 320 0r 325 after all this . Is the m sport a risk also

I believe up to 2007 was safe. I think its when the efficient dynamics came in that the trouble started.
Plenty of bmw heads here who should be able to give you engine codes etc.

I don't think these engines are as problematic as people let on, however, if you want back to the E46 model, the engines there are fantastic, the 2.5 and 3.0 specifically.

M Sport is just a trim level. Pre September 2007 should be OK.

That's an M54 engined model, I have the same engine in my 5 series and it's fantastic, good pull and a great noise. Only thing you have to really look for is a leak in the rocker gasket, if it is leaking it's a cheap fix anyway.

Think I'm gonna hold out for 2008 325 or 320i coupe (e92) probably 325i with bout 70 k miles . Anyone own e92 325i out there what's the mpg realistically

E92 325i's are very very hard to find, especially 08+.

Just a quick question from other stuff I read what would people rather 320 i petrol coupe 2008 m sport 70k miles or
    520 diesel m sport 2008 with 70 k miles.
Two different cars with both reported engine problems . So what would u pick .
    Forget about fuel cconsumption.

Short runs expect around 30 mpg. Motorway at around 110-115kph you should be getting around 38mpg.

BMW are covering the timing chain now for free, so based on that maybe 520d. 530d would be much better. Or what about a 325d or 330d from UK?

If fuel consumption is irrelevant why look at Diesel at all? Especially the N47 engine with its Chain problems!

Well, they do have criteria, but search here, there's a thread on it that discusses a few cases.
