    Hi All,

Thinking of trading in my A4 for a either Volvo V40 or an S80 (1.6-2.0 diesel)

I'm changing jobs shortly and new job will require quite a bit of driving.

In terms of comfort, mpg etc, what would you suggest is the best one to go for?

S80 is two segments up from the V40 so there is a big difference in ergonomics and comfort between the two. S80 is old now though and has been around since 2007, what about the S60? It sits in between the V40 and S80 and the D4 engine is a gem. Volvos generally are extremely comfortable cars though and if you are doing alot of driving then get the most powerful engine you can afford for effortless overtaking rather than then entry level ones.

The S60 is nice and would probably suit me better. Not sure why I didn't consider it. Will arrange to look at a few.

In terms of maintenance, parts etc, are volvo at the higher end?

Also, I see quite a few advertised and the mileage is at 110,000 - 120,000 for a 2011 models. Would I be best staying clear of cars with mileage that high?

If you don't need the additional space, then the V40 is a nice motor to drive, and not too dissimilar to the S60. Boot in the S60 is small, and it's tiny in the V40.

S80 is getting on a bit, but for long distance commuting it's hard to beat for comfort. 1.6d isn't actually that bad, the 2.0d is geared just a bit wrong, so try to find a later D3 model (163 or 136).

D2 in the S60 is adequate and no more, definitely aim for the D3 in that. Again it came in 163 or 136ps versions depending on year - 163ps became D4 when they introduced the 136ps D3 model.

D2 isn't too bad in the V40, but the D3 is much nicer if you can find one.

Volvo main dealer servicing is expensive, but should be OK from an indy, but parts are expensive. If buying from a Volvo main dealer should come with a 1 year Volvo warranty which is very good (covered a Xenon bulb in the wife's car).

1.6d (D2) engine is very common across a few brands, and has the same issues regardless of the car it's in. If it isn't serviced bang on time it will cause costly issues. 2.0d is very reliable, as are the later D3/D4 5 cylinder engines, up to a point. Had some coolant system failures at 200,000km +, but not every one of them.

Volvo parts can be expensive especially if you have to buy them from Volvo. Volvo main dealer labour rates can be eye watering too.

If your looking at a S60 from around 2011 then the D3 engine is the one to go for. It's a 5 cylinder engine with plenty of torque and Volvo's own engine which is very reliable.
