2012 Ford focus - 1.6 diesel refusing to go into gear with engine on

Well I had a lovely fright going home; going into gear was a bit harder than usual but I simply took it as the engine had not quite heated up the oil yet. 200m from home I suddenly can't go into ANY gear, literally speaking every single gear stopped half way (and obviously did not want to try to force my way through the resistance in case it would cause more damage) as if I had not pushed the clutch down properly (and I double checked, it was floored). Pulled over, turned off engine and could get it into any gear successfully as long as the engine was not turned on so got to creep home on 1st gear. No warning lights stay on once the engine is up and running or were blinking/going on on the drive home.

Car has not done significant mileage (40k km) and has been in for service in the same location it was bought brand new from the factory every year on the dot. First problem I've had with it and a bit surprised as it literally speaking came out of the blue (it was just fine this morning driving to work). I've already called their garage and I'll have a tow truck out picking it up in the morning but what I'd like to get a clue on is what the heck has happened and how long should I expect on it to take to fix?

Sounds like clutch, but would need more detail. When you start the engine with your foot on the clutch and gear lever in 1st, does the car try to move forward? If not, can you take it out of first then put it back in?

    Yes; slowly rolling.

I can go out of a gear but I can't go back into any gear with the engine on.

It's most likely the clutch so.

Yep looks like clutch is not disengaging, best off to get it checked if your lucky it might just need to be bled.

Well it was getting stuck halfway down previously but I was told they fixed that at the latest service (which was in November)...

There are a few tales on the net of the Mark III Focus clutch and/or flywheel giving up relatively early in life.

Before your garage does any work, get your paperwork together, scrutinise the warranty if its still valid, because they might try to tell you your driving style is to blame and the clutch has been ridden.

It might be something else like a dodgy linkage caused by a mounting being out of alignment or within the pedal box, but it sounds like a worn out clutch alright.

Clutch pedal Getting stuck halfway -??
That sounds like slave or master cylinder (clutch ) but if it was done in November maybe it just needs bleeding -
Does pumping the clutch pedal help ?

Yes; I resolved it getting "stuck" by pumping it for a few min and it has not happened since; but then again it only happened three times in a year up to November and only after longer drives so not far to common to know if it was resolved or not :/

Well I've got the car back from the mechanic; now I'm not very handy under a car so if it sounds vague or odd simply accept my apologizes in advance. Apparently the spring in the pedal on 2011/2012 Ford Focus has a problem due to poor quality and goes on pretty much every car before 80k km according to the Ford garage I was at (same guys who sold the car in the first place). The newer models have this fixed by replacing it with a better spring and that's also the fix done to the car (and they replaced both cylinders to be on the safe side) and it's good for another 200k km. Thankfully nothing caused by me at least (company car; if I was the cause I'd have to pay part or all of the repair job).
