It's usually ok to drive. Often it's the passenger seat occupancy sensor that gives trouble. If that's what it is, what will happen if airbags are needed in a crash is that the car will deploy both sides' airbags, rather than just the driver's side if the passenger seat is unoccupied. You could double check the connectors under both seats, just make sure they're well connected and haven't been disturbed by some luggage rolling around in the car.

Have you had any work done to teh car recently that might have disturbed an airbag? In the door or anything?

Brake warning lights are not always about airbags. Sorry for confusion.

Of course. Sorry!!! :o ! (hit's self on the head with the embarrasment hammer)

ABS light could mean wheel speed sensors. That's a cheap enough fix.

In the meantime, the car is generally safe to drive, although you might have a less effective ABS system so just bear that in mind. Your brakes will work as normal, but might be more prone to locking in an emergency scenario if you just jam on hard. Also, that may feed into the traction control / electronic brake force distribution system too. Only a fool breaks the two second rule and all that.

Sorry about any confusion - was doing a job last week involving an airbag and it must have been stuck in my head.

One common reason for the ABS warning on these is a faulty brake pressure sensor. Unfortunately the ABS unit on your car has the pressure sensor built into the ABS unit itself and failure is very common. The ABS unit in your car is the Teves MK60 and is also fitted to VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Ford, Mazda, Volvo and Honda models and brake pressure sensor failure is common across all applications.

There is a repair kit available from BMW for the problem, should cost you about €450 for parts and labour to sort the problem, if indeed that is the problem with your car.
