    Hi,

Does anyone know what the phone number for activating the public services card is? I lost the letter and need to activate the card. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't want to use a 1890 number you can also use 071 967 2692

My mother got her card this AM, with instructions to call 1890 number. Tried the 071 number and it just rang out unanswered. Is there another number to ring, or would presenting the card in the PO when picking up pension be enough to validate it?

The PO won't validate it. Why doesn't she just ring the 1890 number as requested?

For the same reason that a lot of people won't use 1890 numbers - the inconvenience (can't call from my mobile) and the cost, esp if on hold for a long time.
I found an alternative number that worked - 017043000

Well if she wants to collect her SW payment as usual this week she'll have to "inconvenience " herself by ringing that number to validate her card.
DSP are doing their best to eradicate fraud and safeguard claimants personal details but it's impossible to please everyone.
She can go to her local CIC and they'll ring for her.

The problem is that 1890 numbers are not covered in inclusive minutes plans on most mobile phone networks. Far from being a convenience 1890 numbers are now often an expensive inconvenience. Any public bodies should be obliged to list a landline number alternative to their 1890 number to avoid unnecessary expense to the public.

Government departments would hardly be trying to discourage enquiries from the public they are supposed to serve would they? Or am I just being too much of a cynic?

It takes all of 3/4 minutes at most and the card is activated

It's not an enquiry though. For security reasons the claimant has to activate the card over the phone. There's no big conspiracy. Ring yourself, go to the CIC and ask them to ring of it's really totally beyond you, or don't bother and manage without your payment.
