Insert stove question

I just got an insert stove installed on my new build. A Riva 50. I'm planning on stone cladding the whole wall around it with Thinstone. My problem is that I have a gap to fill just over my new stove. It's about 12 inches wide by 8 inches tall. The stone cladding will need a backing to adhere to over this gap. The stone mason will be fixing mesh to the whole wall to provide grip for the adhesive. My plan is to fill this gap with cement board. It will be fixed to the block wall on three sides but not on the bottom side. I could make an angle iron bracket for behind this bottom side and affix it to the block wall but I'm worried the heat from the stove would warp the steel and crack the cement board. Any suggestions?
