Could a bead in the filter break the whole washing machine?

Need some advice please. My landlady is keeping my deposit as she says that during the tenancy I broke the washing machine and she had to replace it. She says that it was my fault, that beads which she took out of the filter broke the washing machine. This happened a long time ago and she is only now telling me it was my fault. There was a problem with the machine not draining properly, happened every so often, and at the time she said it would be cheaper to replace (beads in the filter were never mentioned). When I moved into the house there was obvious wear and tear on the appliance. Sorry I can't give make and model as it was so long ago. This dispute is now going to the PRTB.

What I would like to know is if a bead is found in the filter could this have wrecked the whole machine? My head is telling me no but I am not an engineer :)

No it wouldn't. Items that come adrift like buttons and beads get caught in a filter at the bottom of the machine which also catches fluff and you have to clear it out from time to time. Symptoms of a blocked filter are when the machine won't drain properly but you'll see that well before the machine is capable of getting damaged because you'll notice that it's not rinsing properly.

Thanks. I regularly cleaned out the filter but I just wanted to check if as she said the whole machine could have been broken by a bead. She is just chancing her arm.
