Say a Micra? I thought Google used to tell you this but they seem to have removed it, thanks.

About €19 each way on petrol only, or less if you take it gently.

Yup. Big difference in economy between 100km/h and 120km/h

Thanks all, worse than I thought tbh, might stick with citylink for a while longer :(

There and back will cost you 3/4 of a tank at minimum. Did it once or twice in a Yaris. If you ain't in a hurry, 100km/h is a perfectly acceptable speed on those roads. Difference in time will be fairly negligible. Your economy will nose dive above 100 and be laughable at 120 :D

Whats a better 1L car in your opinion for long journeys then?

I forgot about the tolls aswell, getting pricey. Bring on the affordable electrics! (with proper range)

Why were you screaming? Wasit scary driving that fast?:pac:

1.0 litre cars are not designed for long journeys. They are generally designed for urban driving.

You wont have to share the space with a bunch of smelly lunatics who may try to make you talk to them. You cant put a price on that (but if you could, it'd be more than 20 odd quid each way)

You must unask the question, Grasshopper. The most economical way of going about that is probably a ~2l turbodiesel. Having said that, I did 400 miles in a 3l petrol Jaguar on Monday, mostly on cruise-control at 90mph on various motorways, and it did it (just!) on one fifteen-gallon tank. Sometimes more is less, if you take my meaning! :pac:

Why are you so focused on it being 1 litre... as mentioned, such cars are generally built for city driving, and don't have the gearing for economical +100km/h driving.

Because Ill be doing mostly city driving then going down to Galway at weekends. so it could be done cheaper in a bigger car?

    probably not much cheaper

Almost certainly. Possibly using less fuel, but there's more going on there than fuel costs. Caning a one-litre Micra across the country regularly is going to dramatically shorten its useful life and most likely bring a share of mechanical problems, some of them quite costly.

I drive an i10. Normal driving I get about 16 lm/l. Driving down to Galway at 120, I was averaging between 12 and 13 km/l. The extra speed pushes up fuel consumption horribly when you have a small engine.

Summary of the route Dublin – Galway

    Costs
    30.14 € with a Petrol vehicle
    Toll 4.80 € | Petrol 25.34 €

    Time
    02h43 with 02h03 on motorways
    Distance
208 km with 189 km on motorways

With the distance from dublin to Galway being 200kms, the good old l/100km unit comes in nicely.

320d easily do 4l/100km, consuming... 2x4=8 litres of fuel in the process.

    That's over 70mpg.... what 320d is this? 6.5 - 7L/100km would be more realistic

You've 100k in savings and you're obsessing about toll costs in a 1lt?

Just get a reasonably priced 1.4 car and you'll have a car that will comfortably manage motorways with generally good economy.

Nope 4-4.5l/100kms on any long motorway journey.

Im not obsessing over toll costs I only go down the motorway every 2 weeks so Im trying to get an idea of whats the best car to get, Im perfectly happy with citylink in the meantime. I dont see what that has to do with discussions with other people from investments and markets or the property forum so please keep them out of here.

In fairness, this type of analysis is probably why the OP has as much in savings..........

My gf has a 1.8 2007 petrol civic and gets <6.5 l/100 km return when driving to/from Galway (43+mpg) which gives my 120d a run for it's money in terms of fuel economy.

During the week she's doing city driving and gets the expected city economy (8 l/ 100km) so just because you're doing city driving doesn't mean you necessarily need a small car.

I think the phrase is "penny wise and pound foolish".

You're saving small amounts during the week with a smaller engined car but motorway trips soon wipe out any savings.

Looking at with with the facts presented OP, I'd stick to the buses altogether.
Forget about a car at all. Public transport in Dublin is generally pretty good, depending on where you are, and the bus service to Galway is fast, regular and relatively cheap.

The cost of owning a car goes a long way past working out Fuel and Tolls,
Insurance, Tax, NCT Fees, wear and tear/servicing, parking etc etc.

I can think of many phrases but cross country journeys in bus or micra can only be described as willing masochism if you weren't properly stuck for money.

The buses are generally fine, and pretty fast nowadays, with plenty entertainment options available that would not have been there in the past.

If you want a masochistic bus journey head to the States where the greyhound service, in particular, would be of interest.

Generally, buses in Ireland are pretty good and the Citylink/eireeagle are excellent.

I once filled my powerful 997cc Micra in Mcloughlin's in Newbridge, drove to Roscrea and picked up my then GF, drove to Rosslare, got the ferry to Wales and proceeded to drive to London. All on one tank of fuel. Never again though!

@ Op I drove my Micra 5 days a week from Roscrea to Newbridge and back but it wasn't nice to drive above 100kph both for comfort and fuel economy. My wife has a '05 Focus 1.4 which leaves the Micra in the shade in all aspects, we took the Focus, (four people plus camping stuff), to Southampton and could cruise at 70/80 mph on the motorways in comfort etc.

But if you only want the car to get between Dublin and Galway I'd, (as others have), recommend you scrap the idea altogether and stick to the bus. There is a whole lot of other costs to owning a car other than fuel.

Yeah they could be awesome these days but my only experience is from when they were full of stinky, weird or just annoying people who wanted to sit near you and cough repeatedly on you and you just had to suffer it if driving wasn't practical. Trains to a lesser extent and planes to a lesser extent again.
    Hell is other people.

Some people might pay good money for that. Like the kinda people who enjoy bus travel...

I used to use my 55BHP 1997 3 cylinder 999 cc asperated engine Susiki swift going to Galway and back

These are just rough figures but i didnt do toll roads but easy enough to do 100 on the back road especially late at night .

motorway figures (variation can be up to ~10% plus due to unknown factors so this lowest figures)

Speedo normally under reads so 120KPH probably means ~115 KPH

120 KPH was 8.1 litres per 100 kms which was something like ~20Cents a mile in that time
I mostly did 100 KPH which is 6.6 litres per 100 kms and that was easy enough nice speed
90 KPH = ~5.6 litres per 100 kms when money was tight could drop to something like 14cents a mile in that time .
Yes you can save some 30% on fuel if you go slow but a tad faster like 100KPH is affordable and fast enough

Later using a small 2011 KIA car my ex girl friend had with 3 cylinder 999cc engine it was often exactly the same MPG so no sign there has been improvement in new engines I can see .

I used the bus often but it didnt suit me I could go to Conemara or other places with the car .

Small cars are fine on the motorways i done half of Europe in big and small cars and prefer the small cars economy but i travel solo .With a family big cars help a lot
    .

My mates renault 1.2 Clio just went past 450.000 miles no big repairs the normal stuff service oil wheel bearing brakes . I am fan of small cars they can be bought cheap often less than €500 and insurance is often cheap and they are often cheap as chips to run

Large diesel cars of which i had a few are great until 200,000 kilometers then expensive bills arrive injectors all sorts .If you can get car after the other sucker has done the big bills could be good to go another 200,000 kilometers . I was always lucky got them for 1000 euros the other side of the major repairs

A Diesel car 75 bhp 2000cc non turbo old type from 1995 era can do 120KPH and still get 6.5 litres per 100 kms so you can go typically ~10 to ~20KPH faster using the same fuel as small petrol car .On long haul in Europe thats interesting to do ~120KPH but around Ireland wasn't so interesting for me .
