Question about Linkedin and not being able to see some profiles without upgrading

I just signed up to look around, so I know nothing about the service.

Almost all the people I'm interested in talking to come up as "LinkedIn Member", without their name or other details. To see these details I'm told to upgrade to a premium account.

Why do certain profiles require this, while other profiles are pretty much fully open on display for me to view?

Just curious. It's kind of annoying, I don't want to upgrade to premium just to find a person's name and email.

    Cheers

You can specify how much info about you is displayed about you when you visit someone's profile.

And when you see the list of who has visited your profile, you only see a certain number of people before you're prompted to upgrade.

Now, I would hope that upgrading doesn't mean that people can see your details even if you've said that they should not be visible...

Ok, so you're saying: users can specify how much others can see when they click their page. But can they specify that only Premium accounts can see them, OR is it that Premium accounts bypass the users' privacy settings?

Assuming by your last question, you're not sure yourself. Anyone?

    Very quick google shows:
Note: Even if you have a Premium account, you won't see the names of viewers who chose to display themselves as anonymous.

Not sure I understand how this is happening to you.

Are you logged in with an account (a free one).

Are you using Advanced People search... or just looking for people you know by firstname last name?

Mine always just shows "Connect" or "Send InMail". Connect (99% of my networks) gives the person the option to reject my request to add them to my network... inmail require me to upgrade my account. but its rare.

    Linkedin is not Facebook.

People value their networks and select those in their network carefully.

If my profile was fully visible I would be swamped with junk-mail and solicitations. And making contacts with people open up my network to them.

If you want to contact particular people the best way is to find a mutual contact to connect through.

I have to say I don't agree About the junk mail. Mine has been fully open since 2008. I don't get any junk .

LinkedIn is a very powerful tool and becoming more so. I use the free version.

You do get randomers seeking to link to you though.

I was in a course recently for using LinkedIN to network better... one attendee had his profile locked down 100% - he didn't want to share ANY of his data. Kind of missing the point of LinkedIN... he has since removed his tin hat.

It depends a lot on your profile, activity and sector.

I deal a lot with Indian & Chinese companies and as a $ decision maker in my company I get a lot of contact for companies wanting to create a business relationship. 99% of which are not relevant or productive. But I do have to have a relatively open profile due to the nature of my job and the other 1% :-).

Interesting, though the point stands: some users require you to be a premium account to see their details. Or so LinkedIn tells us.

Yeah I get "connect" and "Send InMail", though I'm still wondering why I can't access anything about them (so I can tailor my response better) without a premium account.

For various other people, I can see everything about them.

I'm by far an expert on Li. But I have used it since 08. I assume I have established a sort of trust with the service as a non spammer.

I never really seek out people I don't know... like from other companies. I have my network... And then I add people in 2nd level network at times.

2nd is people who know people I am connected to...but not me directly I think. Then there's level 3...
