Recruitment agency - Interview.

I am not really used to dealing with recruitment agencies but I contacted a few recently as I am looking to move roles and I have very specific requirements for my next job and it was not possible to locate suitable positions via the job searches online.

Anyway, one of the agencies has asked me to call in for an interview, at my leisure. We have not discussed specific positions as of now. On asking about the reason for the interview, they just said it was common protocol for candidates. I am not really buying this but I don't want to be argumentative with them. Can anyone tell me the real reason for this interview? Do some agencies have a quota of interviews to perform or something?

 the purpose of a recruitment agency is to be a screener for a company. how do you expect them to do that without meeting with you? Would you expect to get a job directly with a company without an interview?

There's no real ulterior motive, they just want to get a feel for what you're like in person. If they're putting you forward for interview somewhere they'll want to know what sort of company you'd be a good match for etc. They most likely don't want their customer to be pissed off if they send in someone who's a really bad match.

Personally I tell an agency that I'd be delighted to meet them in person when there's a suitable vacancy that we both think I should be put forward for. It might be convenient for you to nip to them at lunch or before/after work, in which case what's the worst that can happen.

Firstly, a screener for what company? I have not discussed any roles with them. If I decide that the roles they have are not suitable, it is a waste of their time and mine. I would expect to meet with a company that intends to hire me.

Recruitment agencies essentially view you as a product and view the company as the consumer. They call you in to interview, discuss with you what you're looking for and what qualifies you to do the job, then they try to match you to a suitable role in one of their companies.

What do you think a recruitment agency is used for so if you're not happy with them wanting a chat with you?

They want to meet you to get to understand what kind of job you want and what kind of culture fit, etc would be best. They'll want to find you a job you want as well as the job wanting you (so to speak).
There's no point in them sending your CV to companies if you don't want the job! People refuse job offers all the time!

It helps them to sell your skills to the company too. I've gotten job offers for candidates on the strength of meeting them - I talk to my client, say "oh yes, I've met them, they're really lovely, very articulate, amazing skills, I think they'll fit in your team, it'll be awesome, totally hire them" (or words to that effect).

The meeting helps with lots of things. Like, once I met this candidate who seemed perfectly nice on the phone but when I met them, they were STINKING, I mean, reeking. It was helpful to be able to address that before they went to interview - great skills, great personality but no one is going to give the person who smells like a skip a job. :pac:

Even if the consultant has nothing right now for you, they'll keep you in mind for stuff down the line. Something could come in tomorrow that's perfect for you and because you met the consultant, you'll be in the top of their mind.

It helps build the relationship with your consultant too, if you get on well, it really helps. They'll actively go out of their way to find jobs that you'll like.
