1.4 Golf or 1.4 Astra which for 12k?

Currently deciding on a new car.

1. 2010 VW Golf 1.4 80 BHP 68,000km - 12,950 asking price

2. 2012 Opel Astra Sport 1.4 100PS 5dr - 12,450 asking price


I do mostly city driving with very few long journeys.

Both of the above are being sold from a dealership.

What are the pros/cons of both cars?

Any advice on buying a car as this will be my first time.

That old 1.4 engine in the Golf is ancient, underpowered and not very reliable. This 1.2 litre replaced that engine, is turbo charged making it more nipper, it's a better spec Highline model too for not much more than the 1.4 litre:

If there was a gun to my head and the choice was either I would go with Astra. With no gun I would choose something else, much more choice out there with better engines.
