As the title suggests, a friend of mine is interested in buying a Laguna III 1.5DCi. They seem to sell somewhat cheaper than comparable cars from other marques. Are they any good or are they as troublesome as the Laguna II?

They are cheap because of the reputation that the previous model Laguna had and because the Laguna is no longer sold. In reality they don't give any major problems but like any car it will give trouble if it has been mistreated or not maintained properly.

So there is nothing inherently wrong with them like the Mk2 which, for example, had dodgey electrics, window mechanisms etc

Don't think so. The Laguna II and III were like night and day in that department.

The Laguna 3 is was what the Laguna 2 should have been.

The 1.5Dci is a good if a little underpowered engine too.

You rarely hear of a Laguna 3 giving trouble, post 2008 Renaults are a massive improvement on what came before. Having said that we have a 2010 Scenic which has had all sorts of minor electrical niggles. Mostly sorted easily and cheaply though.

you get a lot of car for your money with a decent engine, comfy, good economy and low tax. probably higher depreciation.

That's the rationale behind my friend looking at them, i.e. Maximum bang for the buck. All provided of course that reliability is better than its predecessor :)

That's a fair question as Renault gearboxes haves never been the last word in resilience, and especially so in the Laguna II. The anecdotes of late suggest that these too are tougher in the III

Its not only a much better car than the Laguna II its also classy as well. Renault diesels are very good too. They can even tale a bit of abuse.
The diesels in Citroens and Peugeots do need to be serviced at the right time or you could end up with all sorts of problems as they don,t like to be mistreated. The C5 is a lovely car do too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
