Is the dsg a good gearbox, was looking at a 2006 passat tdi, 2 litre with this box, never drove one, is it better than a 6 speed manual

From what I hear it can shift faster than any manual, any one with this box loves them.

I love the dsg gearbox and would not go back to a manual for my everyday driver unless I had to. That car would have the 6 speed wet clutch so it will cost a bit more to maintain. Make sure it has had its regular dsg oil changes

Do you mean is it worth more now? Or will be worth more later at resale time? Any extra in resale could be negated by the cost of maintenance or any potential issues you need to fix. Compared to a standard box, the cost can be significantly higher. Resale might be a little easier as DSG on the whole is rare in the marketplace.

When new there was around 3 to 3.5k difference between DSG and manual. So there may be a small difference now, however a car with a DSG box will prob sell more quickly. I have one of each and the DSG is a very smooth and comfortable drive.

I had one of those 06 Passats with DSG and it's fantastic and never caused me any issues over 4 years and 200,000 km. Smooth, responsive and the 2L engine is better suited to the car than the older 1.9 block IMO

It's not my old one is it? :P They were pretty tough to get back then but thankfully more people are getting over this "auto=bad, manual=fantastic" mindset these days

Are you confusing this with the Audi A4 2005~2007?

The Passat has the same issue.

I love the DSG box. I'm at 120K miles on mine and no problems so far.

I stand to be corrected here but AFAIK the oil pump tensioner or drive were never recalled. There was a couple of different problems with the early 2.0. A fault with the tensioner which was corrected and a drive the size of a pencil that wore.
i would want to see proof of what was done and talk to someone in the know like George Dalton.

I bought a caddy in 07 with a dsg gear box absolutely loved it, it was the best thing about the van. I sold it on in 2010 with 190k km on it, never serviced the gearbox and I'd no issues with it,

I was a confirmed manual gearbox man until I got a Golf Gtd with the dsg box. Have vowed never to use a clutch pedal again. Just took delivery of Polo BlueGT with the 7 speed dsg and am equally impressed.
Reading around there seem to be very few reliability problems, exception being if the servicing is poor. Older wet clutch need oil change at 60k which is not cheap. Not sure about the newer versions.

I stand to be corrected but as far as I am aware the Skoda did not have this issue.

The Golf based cars didn't have the issue because they didn't have a balance shaft. So Golf, A3, Octavia, Leon are unaffected.

I was messing with the GTI and R configuration and its using the 6 speed wet clutch. Is there a reason newer cars are getting the 7 speed dry but the performance cars still getting the 6 speed?

if you are thinking of buying, make sure its had the gearbox service at the 40,000 miles interval (fluid and filter each time). other than that, they are a great box (the 6 speed at least) and a pleasure to drive.

fwiw, the new golf gti was tested by autocar in the uk for 0-60 times (same exact car but manual vs. dsg)

the manual didnt get under 6 seconds in several runs. dsg, 5.7 every time :)

The dry ones were burning out after several heavy take offs (particularly launch control take offs) in the higher powered cars, so they went back to the wet box that doesn't have the same issue.

Correct. AFAIK first DSG box came to market was the 6 speed wet clutch version .

It can handle up to 350 NM torque. Then 7 speed dry clutch version(it has less oil in it) showed up with limit of 250 NM torque.

At home(crazy stop start traffic is common) 7 speed dry clutch DSGs are having issues due to premature wear of clutches and failure of mechatronic units. VW blames length of use in stop start traffic that box can't handle. 6 speed DSG owners doesn't have that much problems in the same traffic conditions.

I don't think stop start traffic in Ireland can stress any DSG box with mild climate we have here but I still prefer 6 speed wet clutch version where I can.
