Right so I have my own up for sale so I'm looking at what to replace it with.
    The criteria:
Strongly thinking of going down the petrol route but can be diesel
    Must have rear doors
    Around a golf size
Ideally 1.4 (possibly 1.6) for insurance reasons but not a gutless 1.4 and somewhat economical.
    Around 2007-2008
    Budget 7-8k euro.

    Ideally off a dealer.

Current winner is a 1.4tsi mk5 golf but I'm open to everything so post away as I don't look up petrol cars that often so don't know as much about them and want to see what's out there.

They look nice infairness. Although I don't think I could deal with all the fiat jokes not that they are unreliable these days.

I could probably go to 1.6 if that opens it up abit.

Why would you want/need rear doors, surely rear seats would be enough?

I just generally prefer the look of cars that have rear doors I don't know why but I do.

Stay clear of the 1.4 TSi 140bhp and 170bhp twin chargers anyway, they give their fair share of problems.

Did they actually sell the 122 in 2008 or were they all 140 is it just the gt sport they came in back then ?

I think GT Sport was just a trim level as it was also available with the old 80bhp engine.

What are the newer model meganes like 1.5dci 2009. I always liked them learned to drive in the previous model and by the looks of things you can get them fairly right money wise.

If I was you this is probably what I would get. Diesel, 5 doors but better than a golf :p

Well IMO at least it's better looking, Nicer interior, better to drive, newer and probably as economical as the golf if driven easily. Honestly, honestly what more could you want.

Tbh if I was getting an alfa it would be a 159 as I really like them actually like that too. But I don't think I would be able for one they seem to require a lot of maintenance I couldn't really deal with getting up in the morning and knowing there was only a 50/50 chance it would start.

Anyway keep the suggestions coming I do like that but just think it wouldn't be for me.

I'm not an expert on diesel Alfas but I'm fairly sure that they have a GM engine so should be reliable. 50/50 reliability is what the man in the pub will tell you;) honesty I would be surprised if it was less reliable than your golf.

I'll see what else I can find :) but I'll struggle to beat that 147!!

If you could swing the insurance this this a nicely specced GTI.

Nice thought but I'm about 4 years too young. The insurance would be through the roof and fuel consumption. Tbh what I'm really looking for is something that is cheap to tax insure will ideally do close to 40 mpg that kind of the main thing even if it goes slightly on the boring side of things it's not the end of the world as I'll only be keeping it for a year. 1.4tsi 122bhp golf seems to be the ideal Middle ground but they are hard to get so Id happily look at something along the same lines doesn't have to be petrol can be diesel either as long as it's not 1.6psa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

Might you consider something with bigger tax and insurance but a cheaper car?

There are some many interesting things you could get and run for the price you'll sell the golf for if you were willing to go a little mad :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,042 ✭✭✭Bpmull

Right looks like my own is sold.
So if anyone has any other suggestions or links to golf 1.4tsi 122bhp models or possibly dci meganes that they spot that would be much appreciated.

Seat looks nice although I never particularily liked that model. As for the clio 197 Id have one in a heartbeat and I will but just not now. Going by insurance quote the 1.4tsi 122bhp is about as much as I will get away with power wise. Thanks for the suggestions.

Paying a premium to a dealer for a 7/8 year old car that you only plan to keep a year seems quite wasteful for want of a better word.

I'm with dz on this, i think you should go a bit mad and get something different than a run of the mill vw/skoda/whatever else, like you say, you're only keeping it for a year so like you might as well enjoy it while you can!

Did you ever look for one on donedeal there is basically no 1.6 petrol mk2.5 and I wouldn't really like another mk2 if I was buying one. Obviously the diesel would be a no go in these As I try to avoid making the same mistake twice plus I want a car and not just a whole that swallows up money all though I suppose they all do that to a certain extent.

Done Deal is not the only car buying website. ;)

Well there is one 1.4 focus 80bhp on carzone between 2008 and 2009 no 1.6 though try some of the other sites too but they are not exactly abundant.

That 147 diesel that DZ linked previously surely has to be worth looking at?

You considered an Opel yourself and this has an Opel engine! Plus it's absolutely gorgeous to look at.

Did a quick check on CZ there. Narrowed it down to 2008 - 2009 Ford Focus Hatch 1.4 - 1.6 petrol between 7k and 8,999, manual and dealers only and got 12 results.

Anyhow I forgot you had a Focus before so can't see you being that happy with another one.

I said it there in the chat thread. But I just put down a deposit on a car after a lot of test driving and looking I found one like that suited all my needs. I don't want to give away too much until I have it got but happy out :)

Also thanks to everyone who posted on both threads loads of helpful replies :)

Tax on the c02 based system for the 1.4 focus is around €590, it's around the same on the 1.6. If going for a 2008 it would be better to get one on cc based tax.
