I'm 17 and am going to get my first car. I am not sure wat I want but am looking along the lines of the following: vw golf/bora , altezza, Audi A4, bmw 318i/d .. What would the insurance be like and what car would ye pick if u were me. I would buy the car kitted or do it myself ..

    Get insurance quotes.
There's a reason 17 year olds tend to drive small cars with small engines.

You haven't a hope of getting a reasonable quite on an altezza, 318d etc. even boras and golfs are getting insurance loadings due to their popularity with (and I hate this term) boy racers.

For a 17yo and a first time driver I think you should be setting your sights a bit lower. Like a fiesta, clio, Ibiza etc.

I think tou'll find insurance a nightmare on all the cars you mentioned above especially an altezza.

You are going to find it extremely difficult to find an insurance company that will even consider insuring you on an a4 or a bmw taking into account that you're a 17 year old with presumably no drivers experience and maybe even a learners permit. Even a golf would set you back atleast 4000 to get insured. Definitely start on something basic and small you have all the time in the world to upgrade and kit out cars.

At 17 i highly doubt insurance will be easily got on any of the above named cars unless you are a named driver on a parents insurance policy or something. Get a 1.0 Vw Polo, cheap reliable and you may have some chance of actually having your own insurance that is below about €3000

Is getting insured under a named driver the best way?

    On your parents car, yeah.

The insurance company won't be fooled by one of your parents suddenly buying a body kitted heap, falsely claiming they're the main driver and then insuring their 17 year old on it. It's illegal too.

Getting insured under someone with a full license and full no claims bonus as a named driver would probably be cheapest option but many insurance companies won't do this anymore

Thanks. I'll ring up and get a quote and see how I get on

IIRC the car will need to be in main drivers name ie parent and they can't be the main driver on any other car at the same time, good luck with quotes

Buy something your not gonna get pissed at when you scrape it backing out of the drive way etc...we all started small for this cery reason + insurance...my first car was 1988 toyota starlet that inoaid €300 for from an old lady from thr same village. Insurance set me back near €3000!! Start small, get some road experiance & some no claims bonus then you can look at your tezza's, beemers etc

Alot of insurance companies are copping on to this which is known as fronting. All they will do is load whoever is the highest risk on the policy weather it be the main driver or named driver.
