I've been told now - that they are more vulnerable while in flower.

Think Grazon 90 is now called Grazon Pro ?

I've sprayed them in October and they've died.

But, best time is probably on the label, I expect it's when they're growing strongly, can't remember off the top of my head.

Would that be any good for rushes?

Mortone for rushes, some like Agritox better.

Best would be roundup through a weedlicker.

only way to get them right is to dig up the roots

3 years ago i cut them at the base with the chain saw, painted undiluted roundup onto the stump and thought i had them beat.

    But their back this year!!!

I have to say I love the smell of whins on a damp summers evening. If you pass by a honeysuckle aswell it makes farming that much better.

Well, I guess they were planted at one time... Eventually it all goes full circle :)
