Automation in the forestary sectors

    Am doing a project on automation in the forestry sector and want to know how automated it become ive googled it a bit and unfortunatly I can only find stuff on hardware like blue pc systems.could all of the sector from planting to harvesting wood be fully automated like say if you grew trees on a flat area of land as as opposed to on a hilltop

    There is significant automation in place in the forestry sector, particularly once plants have grown to the point that they are ready from 1st thinning. Indeed, it is rare to find large scale thinning and harvesting operations that rely on manual labour these days. Like in most other aspects of agriculture, contractors who invest many hundreds of thousands of Euro in equipment probably do the bulk of such work.

    Although I stand to be corrected, I think the more non- automated side of such operations relate to the actual planting operations themselves, particularly in clearfell sites that are being re-planted.

    What is your project for? School/College or other? If you give a bit more info, the very nice people on here will no doubt give you loads of pointers. Also, there have been loads of Discovery Channel and equivalent programs over the past decade based on logging and harvesting operations in the USA and Canada. These are available on YouTube
