Right lads, basically looking to change careers and get out of the office routine that Ive been in for over a year now. Sick of looking at the same four walls and being seated all day.
Ive heard great things about offshore oil rig jobs regarding pay and holidays and also the fact that your constantly on the go which would suit me greatly. Only thing is I dont see any jobs advertised, I have a degree in Transport Management & Technology not that it would be much good for an oil rig but basically Im looking for info that anyone might have about how to go about getting work on one in Ireland or abroad and avoid all the scams out there that promise jobs in return for money.
    Thanks lads :)

Ever been on an oil rig? I worked on one for over 6 months. It was in dry dock, but the experience was enough to put me off going to sea in one. I made me think of a large, cold, rusty prison only worse :)

    It is not that easy.
I think the first thing you need to do is work out what area you would like to work in. Then get the qualification. Most people working on a rig will have a trades qualification or an engineering degree. Each take at least four years.I would be surprised if there are many working on rigs with less than 5 years post graduation experience as the work is quite specialised.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I did the MIST and BOSIET courses in Falcaragh in Co. Donegal. They are basic safety requrement before any company will look at you. I also had my offshore medical done. These are the minimum requirement for getting on an offshore rig.

I took a different work oppertuinity but a friend of mine that was on the course has been offsfore since 2011 and loves it. He (like most of his colleges) doe not have a 3rd level degree, but you need to hammer the drilling, exploration and pumping oil companies with CV's if you are going in blind (withpout an friend or relation already working offshore). My friend eventually went to Aberdeen for a week and called in to every oil office until he got an interview and a Job.

Seeing how most oil companies are shedding tens of thousands of people with experience you're really really not in the best of times for trying to get into the sector without contacts or experience (it was tough previously); I'd look at alternatives if I were you.
