I want to paint our front door red. It's a stained iroko door, doubt it had many coats of stain, it was a fit and forget door and hadn't been touched in 6 years. What kind of primers or undercoats do I need. I've already begun the tedious sanding process.

Be careful of the sander dust.

You could use the old sanded varnish as a sealer, that way the paint will not get into the pores of the wood, just in case you ever change your mind.
Wash the wood down with turps white spirits.
Apply a good quality boat product such as Epifanes Epoxy Primer.
And follow up with many coats of Epifanes Yacht Enamel.
Follow instructions on the products to the letter.

    Good luck
