I have undenominated engineering down as my first choice on the CAO and I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit about what's it's like or give any advice. I'm decent at maths and physics but I hear engineering is tough and I don't want to go into it if I'm going to end up being unhappy with it/dropping out.

The things you hear are true, it is very tough, but you will not find a course that's easy anyway. If you are good at maths then that's naturally a big help, but as far as physics goes that's not as big a help as you might think. When I was in first year there wasn't really much physics outside a physics module that only lasted for one semester. As far as the course goes in general - personally - I was on the verge of dropping out after about two months, I found chemistry very difficult in particular (they basically try teaching the whole leaving cert curriculum in 12 weeks) and I ended up having three repeat exams. However, I stuck with it and I am now finished second year having gotten good grades so far.

A lot of people seem to say the same thing about engineering, that it's at it's hardest in its first year and gets easier after that. I think its just because when you get into it in first year you'll be shocked at the amount of work you'll have and the difficulty straight off the bat. Be prepared when you get there and don't expect an easy ride, but remember that it's all do-able! I'd say if you're good at maths and any way interested in the field then go for it.

Engineering is tough, and first year you will have a lot of modules due to doing undenominated. I found Chemistry the toughest for me as I had not done if before then.

If you put in the hours you should be fine, all about the effort you put in rather than how well youve done in secondary school in my view. It can be hard not to get carried away with the social aspect and drinking that comes with college. I think first year is tough to do really good in but mainly because a lot are content at doing the bare minimum to get by.

By all means go out and enjoy yourself, thats one of the big things about college, but don't let the work pile up or it will just get even tougher next year.
