Changing bike pedals weekly, consequences?

    Hi,

I'm currently changing my bike pedals twice a week. I commute into work on the bike and also use it for longer distance cycles so I switch between spd-sls and regular flats. Just wondering, is this likely to wear out the threads on either the pedals or the crank arm , am i asking for trouble doing this? The crank arms is a tiagra, the pedals R550s.

    cheers
    Jon

I'd say yes...crank arms are aluminium. If it was my bike I wouldn't change pedals that frequently.

Btw, why not use spds on your commute?

Yeah I was thinking of that, I guess I dont want to invest in an other system, shoes, pedals, cleats...

The reason I put the flats on was for the clipping in and out annoyance going through town, the spds would still be the same. Maybe I could think about changing completely to spd from spd-sl.. is there much of a difference between the two?

If it's a short commute then just leave the SPD-SLs in and ride them with normal shoes. They're fine for that.

If a longer commute then use your cleats.

At what point does a short commute become longer?

When the pleasure of using cleats outweighs the hassle of changing shoes.

Clean and grease the threads every few weeks and they'll be fine. Don't torque them on stupidly tight each time either. You won't wear them out so long as you thread them correctly each time.

That's what ive been doing, ultra careful with the thread ,fresh grease each time, and tightened with the strength of one arm so not to go over board.

These platform adaptors look like they'd solve your problem.

I actually used to do this, I'd commute to college on flats and put on spds at the weekend. For the last month or so I've been commuting clipness and the difference is unbelievable. As for the threads, as long as you take care not to cross-thread they should be fine.

But yeah, you should definitely start commuting clipless. It's so worth it, and town isn't that scary ;)
