Hi, I'm planning to keep my son an extra year in preschool and let him start school when he is 5 and a half. He was born in March. Someone said to me that I should be careful as he may not be able to play sports with his classmates because of the way they have organise the ages. Is this true? He does nursery hurling now that is for 4 and 5 (he started at 3 3/4) and he's probably the youngest. what way do they have the cut offs for ages when they get older?

The rule is you have to be underage on or after January 1st to be eligible for the year. Generally this means those born in January would have an advantage in underage GAA over those born in December.

So for example, an 8 year old child born on January 1st 2007 will be able to play under 8 GAA all of this year. However, an 8 year old child born on December 31st 2006 would be classified as too old for the under 8 grade this year.
If your son was born early in the year, chances are a lot of his classmates will be on the same team as him when he's a bit older. If he was late in the year, there will probably be less. But he'll make different friends on his team if that's the case.
You should do what you feel is best for him. Sports ain't everything.

Rubbish, he wont be the only 5 year old in his junior infants class. There will always be children the same age as him as he progress through the years.

Exactly, I coach an U6 team and we have two lads in the same class but there's 12 months between them for example.

Both are in junior infants but one will be 6 now in April whereas the other is five.

March would be regarded in GAA circles as a good month to be born in!

    November, December, not so much!
