He came to the door and asked me if I have a licence. I didn't know what to say so I said I don't know because my friend uses his laptop here a good bit. He doesn't watch RTE player at all though.

I have no TV or Laptop here - I decided to live the simple life after getting sick. I can't afford this thing - honestly....I still haven't been able to update my dog insurance.

Please if anyone can advise. Thanks.

Contact the number on the letter and tell them you don't have a TV and no need of a licence.
An invitation to return and inspect the property would probably sort it.
You don't need a licence for a laptop even if it does look at real player.

If the letter was addressed to 'resident' you are NOT on their system so you cannot be fined or brought to court. NEVER give your details. However if its your name and details your best of paying up as the worry of a court date or fine is not worth the cost of the TV license

I thought they were making it so every household has to pay because people are using rte player now?

It was put on the back burner

There are plans to but so far it hasn't been implemented. I suspect after the Irish Water PR disaster the government isn't likely to touch it with a barge poll this side of a general election.

I've tried using RTE player once or twice, the thing is a mess. Now I don't watch anything on RTE.

They want to change the law so that computers get brought into the mix but I don't see how they can introduce a computer tax, every business in the country would end up with a massive bill.

This could be another one of those taxes that computers make unworkable.

Ring up and explain that you do not have a television and invite the inspector to visit. Follow that up with a registered letter to them reiterating this.
If you're called to court say that you are willing to swear under oath that you do not and have not had a television.
If you're convicted it'd be a total disgrace.

If you don't have a television you do not require a license for one! If a judge doesn't believe you and you're telling the truth, it'd be a miscarriage of justice. It could happen though. District Courts aren't exactly known to listen to cases for more than s minute or two at best.

If you don't have a TV you should ring them up and tell them so. They will however be suspect seeing that you didn't tell the inspector this when he called and you had the opportunity to prove it to him at the time.

I dont have a TV either, and when I got the letter through the door, I just emailed An Post and told them the story. Its Birr.TV at anpost.ie. (As I am fairly new it would not let me put in the email for some reason)

I got another letter a few years later and sent off another email.

Now, I never got a letter saying that they saw a TV at my house, but I still think email An Post

Write to them by registered letter, don't email.

After the success of the Waters charges, they kind of let this slide...

I don't want an inspector coming into my private house either....would he have to check the bedrooms and everything. Not this day and age when houses are being robbed - no way.

He's probably authorised under some piece of legislation so you may have no choice but to let him in (on production of id of course).

Only if he comes with a member of an Garda siochana and a court order to search the premises for a tv.

You don't have to let him in to prove your innocence, it's his job to prove your guiit...make it as hard as possible. :)

Exactly, he may want or ask or insist on searching your property but has no legal right to, it's your choice to let them in or not. If they have the Gardaí and a search warrant you can't stop them.

I've never done that because I don't want them to have my details at all. I don't have a TV so I'm not going out of my way to make inspectors lives any easier.
