Found this on an Alfa forum, might help you along the way.

I've a buddy who has one of these, gorgeous looking car but gets the typical 'why the hell did you buy an Alfa!' response.

You failed the first test anyway by calling an Alfa an "Alpha". :pac:

The 1.8 litre engine is belt driven and has a change interval of every 35k miles or so afaik.

    Hi,

Great value in the Alfa GT at the minute, saw some very good one's going for 2.5k or so excellent car for that money and if I didn't have the 166 and need the extra space I'd have one of them myself.

Two types of engines available , the older (But better IMO twin sparks) and the newer JTS engines in petrol,i assume it's a petrol you want.As said above the twin sparks are good engines and sound great, full service history is vital and the cam belt change every 35k are the major items, check when the spark plugs were done as well.

Suspention needs to be checked , will have the usual Alfa rattle but the car handles very well if maintained, if it has upgraded Poly bushes that's a bonus.

Reliability is good from what I hear from the owners on the forums and one or two friends have owned them. Interior is a great place to be like most Alfa's, if you do end up buying one go for one with the leather interior you'll regret it otherwise you'll regret it later, red leather is the dogs nads in them.

Yep lookin at getting a petrol and yes the red leather is only way to go 35 k for cam belt to be changed sounds expensive have to check how much that costs but kind of have my heart set on one

Have found 2005 and 2006 one has full history but has the basket ball leather and the other has partial history and it has the cool red leather .
    Life is never simple .

I bought the one in mayo yesterday. I looked at a good few of them on donedeal. Pm me if you want to know which ones not to buy. The back of one of them looks like it was painted with a yard brush, but looks perfect in the photos. The one I bought has a stuck caliper, drivers seat needs repair, and its scruffy inside. Thermostat is stuck open, and the gearstick is sticky returning to centre. Radio doesnt work, and the cup holder is busted. The engine is beautiful...no variator noise, and recent belt/pump. Drove it back home with a grin on my face. I can fix all the little niggles, but im not up for engine rebuilds. Just be aware, you need to be handy to own one, or have very deep pockets

Your better off buying one from an enthusiast who has cared for it and maintained it properly than buying from a dealer who knows nothing about it other than just taking it in as a trade-in. A good Alfa will give you loads of smiles, a bad one however will break your heart and wallet.

Sort of champagne colour,2005, 1.8 petrol. Black leather interior.
I'm way too scruffy for the baseball interior. I would spend the evening in the garage, then straight into the car, so oily and mucky on a regular basis.
Pm on the way about the cars on donedeal.

    +1

As siad above Alfa's are a special car, by special I mean they are owned generally by people who know the cars and work on them themselves or ensure they are maintained 100% by a specialist.

Look for one that is being sold by an enthuist (Alfisti) , they will be able to tell you almost everything there is to know about the car and you can be sure it's been well maintained.

I wouldn't let mine go so much as as half a day with a blown lightbulb , fuse...anything, if it's not 100% it will actually keep me awake at night.
