What car for 17 year old driver?

    Hello
Would be interested in opinions. My son is 17 and I want to get him a car. Main reason is that my car is automatic and i want him to learn and do test in a manual, so he has the full licence going forward. So, main requirements are:

    1. manual car, cheap to tax and insure (and cheap to buy)

Idea is that I will keep this car for necessary time for him and 16 year old brother to learn to drive and pass test. Then sell it and they can drive my car.

Obviously the micra springs to mind. maybe not the coolest car for a kid. Any other ideas? Mind you cool is not a requirement (just a nice to have :)

    Many thanks

I think a VW Polo is a reliable and safe car to start driving in, big 2nd hand market for them in Ireland too.

The Micra is a good car to start in a late 90s or early 00s one are good cars. A Fiat Punto , Skoda Fabia or Toyota Yaris are others you could consider.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Yaris is far ahead of any other car that fits the criteria.

You'll get your money back when you sell it too.

You'll pay handsomely for one however.

VW lupo? Small but reasonably cool if you're a 17 year old

I came here to recommend the Lupo/Arose, pretty cool little yokes and they're not bad to drive when you're 17

What with VW being associated with such high performance cars over here you'd wonder how the Lupo would fair out on insurance though

I can't imagine they're too bad to insure.

Any 1 liter Japanese car is perfect! Yaris,Colt,Swift or whatever. Or you could use a bigger engine Jap. Corrolla/Civic.

My first on the road car was a Subaru Justy, 1.0, AWD - and tbh an AWD Subaru when you're a teenager is quite something

I'm twice that age and still pay relatively a lot on a 140bhp civic. My last car was 240bhp and cheaper to insure.
Insurance companies definitely load civics, no matter how basic - so why would a parent buy one?
I know I wanted a civic when I was 17 but insurance was mental. It was cheaper to buy a new Punto sporting on finance and insure that then it was to buy a €5k civic.

A 1.3 civic is about 80bhp. They're easy to maintain and will take some punishment from an L driver. It would be a grand car for the young fella and his brother after him.And the insurance would be cheap if he was on his dads policy.

    Anyways, was just a suggestion.
