I'd be cautious of a "free" web host like that, you might have to pay to make your site usable or to move when it keeps breaking...

    is this like hostgator hosting?

    Yes it is

An y experience with them? Only use my website for playing and learning so not worth paying for a server.

no company details, generic ssl cert, details of the domain hidden behind PrivacyGuardian (see http://whois.domaintools.com/grendelhosting.com ), it's more like an experiment for someone (likely a minor hence no details whatsoever)
this thing can vanish overnight. stay away unless you want to lose your data

Tried to register with my masked email and haven't received an authorization link. I'd be extra cautious, the only purpose of this site could be email addresses fishing.

Thought it might be ok but guess not..

There is no such a thing as free hosting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭PapaBooje

Well, still it would be interesting to see if other people would have more luck. Whatever you do, don't give away your personal info:)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 50 ✭✭lillian770

It's not only about personal info, it also the fact that your website along with all content can disappear overnight.

It doesn't look like this website is real. I think somebody using it for advertising purposes.

Another free hosting is 000webhost.com I used them a while back and worked quite well, if I recall correctly you need to have a minimum number of visits each month but I don't think it was many.

Well this one looks more legit. But my advice to people would be that there are no quality in free web hosting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭FobleAsNuck

000 is legit, but mind they inject their own ads into your sites (see - they make money off you anyway), and once you start getting some traffic they just suspend you and as to upgrade to premium tier.

if you're on budget, try buyshared.net, for $5/y this is a fantastic offer. I'm on their reseller plan in LU for last year

I have never used this company, but price looks quite attractive.

Thanks for shedding a light on the subject, I may try the hosting you suggested as thinking of creating a website for the band..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭PapaBooje

I wouldn't like to hijack the thread but since the crowd here seems to be very knowledgeble, any suggestions on a good deal for registering .ie domain?

the company behind it (frantech) is legit, and started with VPS and then shared hosting, you can look it up at either lowendtalk.com or vpsboard.net

as for .ie domains - it's alway as ripoff. I have few domains with blacknight but their support is a joke.

Thanks Lillian770, was just hoping that if I could get hosting with buyshared.net for fiver a year and find cost effective .ie domain registration I'd be able to keep website costs low budget..

The thing is that it all depends on your situation. If you are talking about music band you could create a free website on a platform like wordpress.com or tumblr.com or wix.com.
You also need to look at the fact that lots of companies who register a domain also offer hosting services. You might get combined discounts.

Domain registration normally is done through godaddy etc. Also have a look at an offer godaddy has at the moment - domain, web builder and email for £1 p/m. (£12 for the whole thing). Do you have to get .ie domain ? eu for example might be more cost effective.

Wow, wasn't aware of godaddy deal at the moment, it was all different story few months ago when I did research last time! Thanks for the tip. And yes, I do need a "real" website for the band as linking it to the YouTube channel allows me customizing the YouTube channel URL, likes of wix and blog pages won't suffice. I personally think .ie domain looks better than .eu, but it's just a preference. Thanks again, will have a closer look at the options within few days.

I don't think it is that important to have ie domain. Ultimately your website visitors will pay attention to your content / music, rather than domain extension. But then again, price difference is only few £ / EUR. It doesn't really matter, your personal preference is more important in this case.

I might even go with .com since it's available. Anyway, thanks for the input!

Sites.google.com is free and you get gigs of very fast storage, with backup and some serverside stuff like forms etc.

Its limited in you have use their editor- but its not as limited as it first appears and ive done several sites for volunteer clubs etc that they were very happy with.
The fact the tools are easy to use is handy so you are not stuck with having make changes for them - they can do themselves once its all setup.

Jaysus, great, thanks, will check this out too, now I regret I didn't create a seperate thread for it, might have helped everyone else who'd be interested!

Be careful about taking offers from GoDaddy, come renewal time the price can be considerably higher and most of their discount codes are for new purchases only not renewals.

I registered a personal domain with them years ago and used their email hosting service for IMAP email for accounts for the wife and myself.

The price has crept up and up every year but I always thought it was too much hassle to try to move somewhere else but when this year's renewal was €121 I knew it was time to do something about it.

After searching around a bit I came across zoho.com who offer free IMAP email hosting.

Migration was very easy, they have a tool for bringing over all your old emails to your new account.

Have been using it for a few weeks now and the only issue has been that their spam filter is a bit sensitive and a number of mails that weren't spam ended up in the spam folder but other than that I am very happy.

Yap, it seems to be the case with them, I used to have my personal domain with them, I tend to keep re-registering my domain with different crowd every year (or three if there's a deal) - just like my car insurance!:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭PapaBooje

Well, for some reason after going to their webpage all what I get is huge "This Account Has Been Suspended" message...

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    99% uptime is very poor

I'd rather not have my site down for several days per year!

No harm in using this for learning and non-production sites. That said, the wordpress installer uses version 3.3.1 - WAY out of date. Would make me suspect this is a shoddy operation. The WP install I did with the free .cc domain wouldn't resolve.

You can get incredible DIY hosting now for very handy money with a VPS and a trustworthy control panel like Vesta.
