It's about €800 for camshaft, 8 hydraulic lifters, cam oil seal, tandem pump gasket, oil, oil filter, labour and VAT.

It may also make sense to do the timing belt kit and water pump job at the same time because the belt has to come off anyway to do the camshaft.

    that not including labour then?
what causes the camshaft to go only 136k km on car and always serviced, had lots of problems with the passat 1.9 and people told us alot more reliable than the 2litre

The usual reason for cam wear on a 1.9TDI is either incorrect oil being used or oil not being changed often enough. Very often the damage is done early in the car's life but the problem doesn't appear until much later.

    BXE engine code??
We had a golf SDI at one stage the pulley on the cam was slipping. The end result at the time was the main dealer involves built up the shaft with weld, ground it down and new pulley. Never had a problem with it after.
They had seen and repaired quite a few of them this way

Different issue on the PD engines. First one or more of the cam lobes wear and once they wear they start to wear out the corresponding hydraulic lifter. Eventually the cam wears through the top of the lifter and that is when the noise starts. So the problem can be there for years and thousands of km and only becomes apparent once the lifter wears through completely.

I posted some pictures of a worn lifter on here a while back, I'll see if I can dig them out.

    Here we go:

Worn lifter, this wouldn't have been making any noise yet despite being obviously badly worn, so just shows how the issue develops over time:

And here is one of a lifter that has worn out completely compared to a brand new updated part:

I have seen a few oil pump issues on these engine also, quite significant bearing wear found when replacing the cams usually shown on these
