ABS light has been on in dashboard for last 2 years, drove fine, got car serviced in a main dealer garage last week and enquired how much to sort out ABS light issue...was told the whole ABS would have to be replaced costing 1300 & 700 to put in ...2K?
The car itself has 124K miles on it & is only worth 4Kish , how could one justify spending 2K, my NCT is soon , what should one do?...what sort of price could one get it done for?..is it going to fail my NCT ?

Get a second open of a decent independant garage. Could well just be an abs sensor that could be replaced for 100-200 euro. Any good mechanic with decent diagnostics equipment will be able to tell you exactly whats wrong it's highly unlikely that the whole abs system needs to be changed.

Dealer won't check an issue like that without the go-ahead from the customer as they would want €70 extra for doing so.

I saw an invoice from an Audi garage recently where they had carried out a full service and front and rear brake pads and then charged the customer €110 ex VAT on top of all that to scan the engine ECU and tell them the EGR valve needed to be changed.

Crazy really but that's the way they operate.

It is an NCT fail if the ABS light is showing. The car will drive fine but likely won't stop fine.

Not true. The car will stop perfectly on a good surface. The abs is only needed on poor surfaces. Most drivers panic when the pedal starts pulsing and take their foot off the brake pedal which defeats the point of abs.

Unfortunately in an emergency stop situation you can't know beforehand if the road surface will be good.

Any driver with an eye in his head and a feel for the road should know the road surface they're travelling on.

Yes if it's a brand new road and has been certified clean.

?? I don't get the point you're trying to make there.

I am trying to make the point that changing your driving style because you know the ABS system in your car is faulty because you know the road surface is dodgy is fine but when you get an unexpected bad surface that you can't see the ABS is needed and with the OP's car the system may be not working at all or partially working so the stopping distance would be unknown.
