    The word isn't coming to mind and its driving me queer.

    An adjective for an old battleaxe of a woman, something like "hardian".

    Can anyone help me?

    You're maybe thinking of _harridan_? However, I think that's not an adjective...
    Or _termagant_? That's a noun as well as an adjective.
