can anyone tell me how you went about transferring to a different department within the civil service? I cant find any information on this. redeployment seems to be a slightly different thing.
    many thanks.

Many different options but it does depend on the department your with for example it's harder to transfer out of Social Welfare than from Agriculture.

First port of call would be to contact your own personnel section.

I find my H.R department often very vague on details. its hard to get a yes/no answer out of them. I thought I'd ask here first before braving H.R.. thanks though.

There is no official established way of transferring between Departments if you mean is there some place you apply to. Depts often get contacted by people in other Depts (social Protection particularly so as they are everywhere) seeking a transfer and they may put you "on a list" but that doesn't really mean anything. Social Protection will go to their list if a spot comes up and will offer it in chronological order or requests received but what happens is they contact the person's current employer who might let them go or just as likely say no and that's the end of it. Redeployment as you say is a different thing it is not a transfer mechanism. CAF (the decentralisation lists) are gone and Dept's are not to use them (but one Dept "missed" that Memo).

Various Unions allow ads in their magazines for "head to heads" but again even though two people may find each other in this way, neither Dept is obliged to let someone transfer.

The Civil Service Renewal Plan envisages an Inter Departmental Transfer Portal being put in place but let's wait and see how long that takes and how many inefficient rules are put around that.

HR Divisions aren't vague on all of this, the reality is there is no process to actually spell out!

Sounds like you'd need to to transfer by doing an open competition for the same grade that you are already in if your department won't let you transfer?

Thanks for that. Yes I thought there was an official way of transfering. Also my role would be seen as a technical role so might be difficult to swap with an admin role.

Does anyone have any more info on this or did you find anything else OP?
Anyone have any ideas how long the Interdepartmental Transfer Portal might take to materialise? It seems mad that there's no way to match up interests and expertise with roles.
