Hi all, my regular mechanic seems to have gone awol after recommending getting my rear shocks replaced some weeks back.

Can anyone recommend a decent mechanic in South Dublin that I can call to get these done?

Also have a weird noise coming out of my engine, kind of a whirring/grinding noise that comes on intermittently sometimes just after starting. You can only hear it from inside the car when in low gear and going slow.

Doesnt seem clutch or accelerator related. Thought it might be air con related but awol mechanic didnt think so nor did he think there was a belt issue. Very strange one to troubleshoot.

That's a pretty short lifespan for a set of shocks.... Many miles on the car?

Couldn't help you with the other issue though, I'm afraid.

I wonder is the grinding noise the starter not retracting? What engine is it? Also wondering did awol mechanic need money for his trip. You could just get the shockd checkded rather than replaced.

only about 58k miles. Have been in and out of UCD a good bit last 6 months or so. Probably the speed bumps in there did the damage

    2.0L diesel engine, 1968cc

To be honest he seemed sound out, recommended by a friend. Serviced the car for reasonable price and said one of the shocks was leaking at the back. Was going to come back to me with an aftermarket price for replacing the shocks but despite calls, voicemails etc, the man could not be contacted again :D

Had the car back in the wild west of Ireland last weekend, thought I could hear the shocks creaking a bit on the strange roads.

Dont think its related to the starter. Sometimes can hear it after leaving a motorway and then slowing down in traffic. Intermittent though so hard to know.

The ramps in UCD managed to break away part of my exhaust on my 156 V6 last year, can't imagine they would be the cause. One shock leaking would require both to be replaced.

If you want someone who really knows his German stuff especially VAG stuff, George Dalton in Port Laoise comes highly recommended. I appreciate out of the way, but he could pinpoint whichever problem you have.

Sounds are normally tricky to source. Id get a mechanic to check it out in case something important is on the way out like the water pump.
