You wouldn't be tightening it anyway.
    What's happened?

Try an independent garage. Using a main dealer for a 9 year old car isn't necessary.

Is the car commercial or passenger?

It's arguably worth fixing then. Had you planned on keeping it much longer before this happened?

Price seems astronomical? Got a chain and tensioner and rail replaced last year on a tsi golf for about 1100 from dealer

To the average person probably not but when u just paid 3750 a couple of weeks ago it's hard to just write it off .

I'm not suggesting you pay €3k by the way, just suggesting it's worth fixing.

    This has a chain.

Get a second opinion. If the guy didnt know if it had a chain or belt I would'nt pay too much heed to his diagnosis and stay away from the main dealer.

Did the main dealer actually say the chain was the problem?

Yes main dealer advised that the chain was the problem and would need to be replaced .

Caught between a rock and hard place really ,it's not worth much but if it stops running it's worthless ,

Do you mean you have just bought it? privately?

This engine has three chains with three tensioners and all assosiated guides etc, so it will be expensive to replace everything.

Most likely it is the top chain that's causing problems and possibly the others are ok but you wont know until it's opened.

Try to find a recommended independent garage for a second quote, opinion.
