First Time Build, for streaming and poker

    1. What is your budget? €800

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Playing poker with a HUD, multiple tables at once. Also plan on streaming so will need any accessories (i.e good headset). Also planning on playing current gen games (gta v, dragon age inquisition. mainly a rpg player).

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? No

5a. If yes, what size do you need.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? Will be looking into dual monitors in the near future so I need compatability for this. For now going to use an old hd tv i have laying about.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Yes

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes, but considering I'm a novice i think ill leave it until my next upgrades.

    8. How can you pay? Debit card, bank transfer. Cash.

    9. When are you purchasing? ASAP, within next few weeks.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Mayo

Would really appreciate any help guys.

I'm essentially looking into getting a gaming pc that will be able to run current gen games well, but primarily will be used to run 6 plus tables of poker while also running a HUD.(HUD databases can grow very large). I would like the build to be able to run effortlessly during a daily grind.

I also plan on streaming in the near future, not poker though, probably some more recreational things like GTA V or something like Hearthstone.

Dual monitors will be my next step after I build the rig but I'm not in a rush to do so, I imagine that won't be too hard to configure.

I had another think about the build today and I don't want to overclock. Don't think it would be necessary at all for the tasks id want to do (though I don't have any experience with it) .

Could really do with some advice, any poker players in here?

I would think this would suit if you. Know little about what you're doing but I've taken from it that you'll need RAM for running several tables. If they aren't intensive then you could go with 8gb and get an SSD.

    i5 4460 185
    16gb ram 118
    Nanoxia DS 3 65
    Thermal take Berlin 630W 70
    1tb HDD 50
    GTX 960 216
    Motherboard 80

About 795 delivered. Forget the price of the PSU but its under 70.
Can link later or tomorrow maybe

I'd go with a better gpu for gaming and knock down the ram to 8gb, running hem or pt4 12 tables + isn't intensive at all on my setup and I'm only using 8gb

Thanks Digital appreciate the input. Yeah sure link me whenever i've been looking into it for a while.

Question for you : Regarding the SSD, I was looking at getting the Samsung 850 2.5inch, and as i said will be playing mainly poker. Should I store all and anything related to poker (including my hud software AND database) on the SSD, and everything else on the HD? OS on SSD also of course.

Also, do you have any recommendations for a decent mouse/keyboard (wired preferred), and headset? Was looking at the hyperx cloud gaming headset seems decent.

Are you using a SSD? What kind of setup are you using if you dont mind me asking?

Crucial BX100 or MX100 are fine SSDs, cheaper than $amsungs.

GTX 960 or R9 280X are best GPUs on budget, I'll get your links now

    Yeah I'm using a ssd

    8 gb 1333mhz ram
    r9 290 tri-x
    i7-4790k
    120gb samsung evo
    1tb barracude hdd
    ASRock Z97 Extreme4 motherboard

An i5 would do the job fine

Gtx 970 and r9 290 are around 300 euro still but imo worth it, otherwise go with Digitals solution. Both great cards too

Hank this may seem a very stupid question, but how do you set up your files on the ssd? What do you store there specifically. Seems like you're a pretty intensive poker player so I'd love your input on how to maximise it's potential.

Do you store your hud database on it?

Got any preference for mice when playing poker?

    Thanks again for the response.

Just install poker tracker/hem and stars or whatever to your ssd. Simple as that

Mice no, any mouse would be fine. I use a g400s for gaming

GTX 970 is about 370 Hank.

    Item|Price
    Thermaltake 630W Berlin|€€ 62
    Intel Core i5-4460 in-a-Box|€€ 182
Nanoxia Deep Silence DS 3 Dark Black, without power supply|€€ 66
XFX Radeon R9 280X Double Dissipation Edition with MANTLE and Gaming Evolved client, 3GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, 2x Mini DisplayPort|€€ 236
    8GB Kit Crucial Ballistix Sport Series DDR3-1600, CL9|€€ 55
    ASRock H97 Pro4, LGA 1150, ATX|€€ 85
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 1000GB, SATA 6Gb / s|€€ 54
    Crucial SSD 250GB BX100|€€ 89
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€845

If you can't stretch, get a smaller SSD like this but not worth the difference IMO. My recommendation would be fork out for the 250gb, split to two 120gb partitions, poker on one, Windows on the other. Use HDD for games and other files

Thanks guys grateful for your input.

Im sure a google search will help me set up that partition pretty easily digital yeah? I'll def splash the extra for a 250gb, not scimping on the ssd.

Any other recommendations will im here for accesories etc? Planning on using a wired connection so no need for a wireless adaptor. Ill be looking into getting a good headset/mic combo, chair etc. Starting from scratch really!

Well it's not a tough job, I can't remember if you can do it in the Windows installer however.
Installing Windows on the HDD and then partitioning the SSD and reinstalling windows would only take like an hour if it came to it anyways.

Hank will be better for recommendations than me I think, I've no mic at all, and a dirt cheap mouse.

Get your keyboard from UK/IE so you've the right layout. If you'll be typing a lot, it's never too early to invest in a mechanical keyboard (warning, expensive). Dunno about poker, but gaming in general, a 5 or 7 button mouse is very useful for binds like "reload, use, talk, switch weapon" or whatever. Skyrim with a three button would kill me....

Never used an expensive mouse so I can't say, but my €15 Perixx MX 1000 is still adequate after 2 years

    Greats news, thanks man.

Uh was also wondering if i need any accessories to attach components? Like the hdd and ssd, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

No, two cables into a hard drive. SATA, you get two with most motherboards, and power, which is connected to your PSU

Most cases come with SSD bracket now as well.

decent size SSD would be perfect place for the tracker database, they say the general rules of thumb is ~=5GB per million hand for HEM2 and a little over double that for PT4. If it is HEM2 you have you can also use NTFS compression on the data folders should the need ever arise. I wouldn't have a huge amount of hands as I just play small stakes casually at the weekends, but my HEM2 sees relatively low RAM usage, I doubt you'd ever go much over 1.5GB even with a database of millions of hands.

Wow really Marco? Yeah I run HEM 2 so even better I guess. Thank you for the solid info.

The review section on pcspecialist is worth a look. If anything takes your fancy there it's usually a good bit cheaper than assembling it online yourself.
