Usually it would only be the basic engine and all the other bits transferred from the old engine.

    the bill is for...

supply and fit all new parts:

    Engine
    Catalytic converter
    Lambda probe x2
    injectors x 3
    oil
    coolant
    plugs.

When my old car got a new dealer supplied engine it was a just a new block all ancilliares were taken from my original engine.

They probably fitted what's known as a long block, engine block, crankshaft, pistons, cylinder head inc valve train and cams plus sump and rocker cover.
All your other parts would be transferred from your original engine.

yeah, me being paranoid and all that I noticed that the dipstick is the same one out of the old engine and that got the mind racing, i suppose it makes sense to harvest the parts from the original engine seeing as it only had 13k on it
initially I thought all parts would be replaced, shows what i know.

If you're that worried, check the engine block number against your registration cert.

where would that be? (not the cert) :D

Well VW said it was fuel contamination and the assessor from the insurance company agreed with them, that's about all I know. Must say I was majorely pissed about my car, but cannot prove where fuel came from. €5k bill

How much was the new engine.

How much would a second hand engine cost

total bill was a smidgen over 5k.
car is only 12 months old (141) and the model (VW up) only came out in 2012, so doubt there would be many 2nd hand engines about, Not that i would want a 2nd hand one going into such a new car, only 13k on it.
engine price on quote is €1925.35 ex vat

Petrol stretching is been used as an excuse far too much now.

I wonder was any fuel samples taken from the tank and sent for lab analysis.

doesn't matter now the work has been done, what else would cause the problem in such a new engine?, haven't heard of any other ups with faulty engines. 90% of the mileage was motorway.

What internal damage did VW claim happened thanks to the poor fuel?

engine light came on then ecp? a slight loss of power ( easily noticed in a 3 cylinder) they did a compression test found the results to be very low for such a new engine and that's about it as far as they told me, then they serviced the car under warranty then they told me it needs a new engine and then they had the cheek to ask me to pay for new oil, plugs etc because the "old" ones ( a week old) would need replacing. why would you service a car that was getting a new engine a week later? they do my fu ck ing head in.

VW dealers would normally follow the approved VW repair procedures and in this case probably would include fitting new sparkplugs. Spark-plugs are normally changed every few years. Oil is oil, this is never re-used.

I'd love to know what caused the poor compression, poor piston rings? damaged cylinder wall? valve leakage? etc
