Eflow letter/toll charge

Got a letter this morning saying i had been recorded using the m50 toll road without paying the appropriate toll.
I left the 3arena went into the port tunnel paid the 3 euro s to do so and asked for directions to Limerick. He said m50 southbound and off i went.
My question is how is it possible for me to drive through the m50 toll without paying?

I didn't drive through the ezpass thing so I'm confused. I'm not familiar with the roads around there at all and any toll i came to im positive i paid.

There are no toll booths on the m50

There are toll cameras between the N3 and N4 exits that would have picked up your reg on the way to the N7 exit.

I understand that. But how is it possible to drive through a toll without paying? There are barriers and there are people manning them.
Am i missing some thing here?

There is no barriers and no toll booths. As previously stated it's barrier free and it's recorded by cameras.

Ahhhhh thank you. So you either pre pay or you pay within 24hrs.
An awful system .especially for tourists?

But a fantastic system for keeping traffic moving, and not having to que 30 minutes each way, every day, twice a day, to get through a barrier.

The maaaaaassive signs on either side of the road telling you to pay your toll online within 24 hours is kinda a giveaway too....

Yes it's truly dreadful if you are one of those drivers oblivious to everything on the road. There are numerous huge signs advising of the toll on the approach

There are HUGE signs along the M50 telling you this OP..pricing..timing..deadlines, etc. No offence but if driving on unfamiliar roads you should be a bit more observant.
Did you also drive in the middle lane the whole time? (Sorry couldnt resist! Ongoing M50 discussion here :P)

tourists would mostly be hiring cars, and the car hire companies explain in person very clearly what is to be done. They have leaflets and often they staple a leaflet to your pickup documents just so you are aware of the issue.
Some even pay the toll and bill it on to the customer then afterwards.

once (as a tourist in my foreign car) I did forget about the toll, but rang a couple of days later to pay it and there was no penalty charged.

Anytime i've rented a car outside Ireland i've always had a tag in the car and i just get the toll charges added to the final bill. The M50 barrier free toll wouldn't pose an issue to a majority of tourists.

Criminal that this toll is still in exisitence and especially at such an exorbitant rate. The road has paid for itself a hundred times over already so it's just a case of the Irish motorist being the easy target euro extraction. The M50 should be trying to promote people out of the city centre instead of onto even more congested city roads.

Generally I avoid the M50 toll given it's cost and the inconvenience of having to remember to pay. Sure it being barrier free is good at avoiding congestation at peak times but there should still be an option for individuals to pay in cash and in person at the time of crossing.

Not in comparison to what it was when the barriers were there.

Northbound in the evenings, it's heavy from Red Cow to Lucan, but unless there is an accident (all too frequent unfortunately), it flows pretty freely.

    seriously?

how hard is it to set up a video account for the car, which costs nothing to set up and has no monthly/ yearly maintenance cost.
I've my german reg car with a video account that I set up after forgetting to pay the one time and decided there had to be a better way, which there is.

Ive even put the parents car on it as a second vehicle with no problems.

There's nothing unusual about barrier free tolling - a lot of tourists will be familiar with it anyway.

London and a couple of other British cities : congestion charges are similarly operated.

Many other EU countries use camera and tag based systems on motorways.

Em...while its unfortunate the OP felt he was made look like "a ****e driver". Its nothing to do with "trolls" he was told to have better observation when driving as he asked about the M50 toll.

Well in my defense thinking back on it,it was late i was tired as i had drove from Limerick that day. first time through the port tunnel, first time on the m50 southbound and i do remember seeing the signs for a toll, getting my money ready and thinking that toll must have been for another road when it didn't appear And continuing on oblivious.

Im not a ****e driver,i guess my eye was off the ball on this one occasion. I'm sure every one in here has made driving mistakes.

    Do this!
I set up a video account for my car, added the mother and the brother's cars, none of us use the m50 regularly, I think I pay about for 10 or 12 trips a year, and never have to think about it.

Like you, I did it after getting a fine in the post....
