4 way stop

    Hi all,

Anyone any idea where I can find out how a four way stop sign junction works in Ireland. I know how they work in the US etc - and my assumption is that its not the same as they work here - in fact I'm curious to see how people think they should work.

Is it the car to the right has the right of way? what if 4 cars arrive at the same time?

what if there is a line of traffic at the junction entrance to your right - do you never get to proceed?

4 way stops are rare in Ireland - but they do exist. Do adequate rules exist to cover them?

this seemed like the most appropriate place to post - if not can a Mod please move.

If you are getting ready for your test - don't get hung up on this, Its unlikely the route will cover this.

    thx

It's a crossroads with roads of equal importance.
You yield to traffic to your right. If all arrive at the same time (rather unlikely) it would normally take the person who is, let's say, the bravest/pushiest/owns the biggest balls. The rest will follow on from there.

It can also happen if the traffic lights are out at two roads of equal importance, or equal-ish importance in the minds of drivers. Happened a few days ago at the intersection of Collins Avenue and the airport road. I believe that the traffic going north/south on the airport rd had the right of way (as technically it was a more important road) and that traffic going east/west on Collins Ave were supposed to yield to them. It didn't happen and it was a total free for all. Luckily a Guard arrived and began directing traffic, but I have no idea how several accidents didn't happen before he got there.

Chances are traffic lights will be used at a crossroads - unless the roads are in the middle of no where and not busy in which case it's basically a roundabout.

There's a 3 way stop at the junction of Wellington road and Patricks hill in cork - and the 4th road Is one way so no exit - often wondered who came up with that design -

Junction of Killiney Hill Rd and Military Rd in Dublin is the only one I've come across. "Bravest" usually gets to go first:D

I was asked this in the oral part of my driving test in Jan. The answer is yield to vehicles from the right :)
