HSE resorts to quackery religious mumbo jumbo

Friend of mine told me a shocking story today that she went to her local health centre today (can I mention it?) to see a psychiatrist.

The doctor she seen was a middle eastern man.

    Here's her words
He was no ****ing help at all. Dismissed everything I told him and suggested I pick up and read the Koran.

She hasn't lodged a complaint yet (I TOLD HER TO DO IT NOW) but it's very concerning that the HSE are letting people like that into our health service ffs. Bad enough we are employing doctors in hospitals with questionable credentials.

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/nurse-snatched-scalpel-off-doctor-about-to-cut-vein-252597.html

She pissed off and upset about what happened. I stopped going to mental health services in 2013 because it felt like they treated you like you were a burden, everything was on a budget and that you should just go do it kill yourself. Thanks to my own doctor and the 24/hr doctors who are there for me the times I'm really bad.

Of course this Friday we will probably have the usual HSE/DOHC product placement (GAA Player, Jornalist, Rté celebrity) on The Late Late Show saying "I was drinking a pint of vodka a day. The HSE were great blah blah blah" ****

UN****ING BELIEVABLE 2015 AND RELIGION (be it a controversial one) IS STILL THE ANSWER TO ALL OUR PROBLEMS.

    We are both Atheist btw.

    Why?

Because its a health centre not a mosque/church whatever. We went this through **** up to the late 90s in this country with the RCC and now they are pushing a new religion out there are no ****ing help at all to patients.

Just as well you started a thread on after hours on it rather than make a proper complaint.
But it never actually happened, did it?

Maybe he meant to pick up a Heavy Koran and use it as a barbell weight.Does she need to work on her biceps?

Yes its ****e we have the best health service in the world look at all those empty beds. Look at the suicide rates in the past 5 years. ZERO? WOW! I'm anti-quackery passing off cults as some form of help whether its the doctor himself or the HSE. She will be lodging a complaint with the HSE over this. Defending the indefensible again on here as usual. Same with the medical card/Compensation issues.

Actually I want someone from the DOH and the HSE to come on here. I understand they can't get into patient/doctor relations with a 3rd party but they can fill us in on policy of promotion of religion and faith at work. What steps they take to prevent this and what action will be taken.

I'm here. Will they come on????

I will gladly post my number on here if they want to contact me in relation to it.

I wouldn't hold my breath Chris.

I don;t think they have a religious policy. If this doctor did say this, then you can hardly blame the entire HSE for what one man might have decided to say off his own bat.

    Ring liveline.

Why would the HSE reply to a post on a light hearted forum on boards after you called a major world religion mumbo jumbo?

Perhaps you should try a new different psychiatrist, or a psychologist.

You'll find a few nutters in all forms of life. In the HSE... there are even a few on boards

Sorry if I sound like I'm snapping I'm not in the best of moods today. I just woke up there a while ago she's in a very bad way at the moment and I was up until 12pm yesterday texting her. I actually thought today she would be okay when I woke up.

HSE policy is mostly mumbo jumbo, trust me, I do work for them.

The only time to be worried is when a statement from the HSE actually makes sense, you may be starting to think like they do

Maybe the doctor saw some kind of imbalance in your friend's head and felt that with one side messed up that reading the Koran/bible/fantasy novel from ancient times would mess up the other side thus rebalancing your friends head?

Proselytizing is not on and the doctor should know that. However context is key, you have not provided enough to determine anything.

If the psychiatrist dismissed her then perhaps she is not suffering from a mental illness.

Presumably the Koran comment was because he thought she was Muslim and suggested it might help whatever is up with her. If it's not a mental illness then he's not any more likely to be able to help than anyone else. It wasn't medical advice, nor presented as such. It was a suggestion made in a personal capacity.

Perhaps her behaviour/problems are the result of personality/lifestyle.

Btw I don't want to sound like I'm painting the whole HSE with one brush. I remember I was pretty low a couple of years ago coming home from Waterford and I went to the HSE in Clonmel mental health centre and though they couldn't do much because of red tape they got someone out to talk to me. The health service really is a postcode lottery. Everybody should have the same good quality treatment be it Mallow, Thurles, Clonmel, Athlone etc And should treated with respect and dignity when it comes to their beliefs. Another problem is they give you whatever psychiatrist is there. That's fine for emergencies but when it comes to treating someone I think the patient should be with one psychiatrist. I'd also if I ever went back would like the patient having the choice of which psychiatrist treats them.

Hang on why the hate against the OP. A clinician can't tell a patient to read (insert holy book here). What has that got to do with medicine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭2 stroke

Why are you upset that a doctor recomended reading a book?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,743 ✭✭✭blatantrereg

If he said there's nothing wrong with you, go drink some tea, you wouldn't think he was giving medical advice to drink tea.
He said there's nothing wrong with you, go read the koran (presumably misjudging the woman's position on it). Nothing to do with medicine no, but not preented as medical advice either.

If I went into that doc with an open fracture I wouldn't accept being sent home to read a book.. OP's friend was at least distressed from what I can gather and so in my opinion shouldn't have been told to read a book, any book, either..

I for one am glad you are confronting this use of religion in the HSE and are using the proper channel to move forward with your complaint.

    Nothing.

If, however, you had a serious complaint to make against the HSE and a supposed medical professional (and I believe this might qualify as one), would you (a) contact the HSE, either yourself or through representation or (b) start a thread in AH?
