My Cluster is malfunctioning and showing 999,999 on the mileage. Everything else is fine.

Its a 15 year old Audi with only 100k genuine on it. Barely driven as i have a bike aswell. Ive owned it nearly 10 years and its in perfect condition apart from that.

Its illegal to clock a car so a new dash is needed which costs more than the car is worth.

    Anyone any input?

    Cheers

Won't be a fail but you will have a 999999 on your new disk. They put the mileage on them now.

Is that definite? Good news if it is.

To be honest i can see myself with this car another 10 years. Couldn't care less what the NCT Mileage says for reselling.

it's only illegal to "clock" a car to deceive a buyer. i can't see there being an issue buying second hand gauges and putting the correct mileage on them.

that said, as above, if it doesn't bother you having the wrong mileage on the cert, then i'm sure it'd pass.

Thats the easiest fix but the Cluster was only in production for a few months and is extremely rare. Ive been to Audi forums for people who fix them and they never even heard of the model. It has an immobiliser built in rather than a separate box which means its not possible to swap for a different one from a breakers.

Pain in the arse as apart from that the car is bulletproof.

My didgital odometer has read 999999 for the last 4 years, it's not a fail as long as the speedo is working/legible if it's digital and (not sure here but in the UK ) instrument lights working ( so you can see your speed at night )

Open to correction but i believe its not illegal to clock , rather its illegal to sell a car that has been clocked.
You can sell a clocked car with 'unknown mileage ' ir incorrect mileagein the description.

I'm afraid it is but if you can show you had good reason you may avoid prosecution or conviction.

Interference with odometer of mechanically propelled vehicle

    14. (1) A person shall not interfere or attempt to interfere with the odometer of a mechanically propelled vehicle.

    (2) A person who contravenes, or who procures another person to contravene, subsection (1) commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a class C fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months, or to both.

    (3) Where a member of the Garda Síochána has reasonable grounds for believing that a person is committing or has committed an offence under this section he or she may arrest the person without warrant.

    (4) Where a person is charged with an offence under this section it shall be a defence to show that at the time of the alleged offence the person was acting in good faith in order to test, repair or replace the odometer of the mechanically propelled vehicle.

    (5) In this section “odometer”, in relation to a mechanically propelled vehicle, means the device that measures and records the distance travelled by the vehicle but does not include an auxiliary device capable of being reset to measure and record individual journeys.

It must look a bit funny to have 999,999 on the clock and the NCT disk tbh.

Sorry to here you have that problem OP, but definitely not a fail. Unless this kind of ileage is considered as dangerous.

Could be a trouble when selling , though as it would be difficult to confirm the actual mileage.

My understanding of those immob. Is a decent locksmith with vag commamder or vagtacho will be able to put the correct mileage onto the new clocks and match your keys to the immob. The immob code will be stored on the ecu of the donor car so you would need to pull the skc from there first while that car is still functional. They dont store the code in the clocks afaik. An awkward job as you say it would be pricey to get someone to do it, but you can get a vag tacho setup yourself from the internet for under 50 quid. Saying all that i could be talking out my arse as im only guessing its similar to the setup in vw's in around the same year.

Through much tinkering got a vag commander setup going on my transporter. It had the same setup as yours with th immob in the clocks.I couldn't find the secret key code (skc) within all the other code i pulled of the ecu. It wasnt in any of the places its normally found on about 10 different immo. Ecu setups used by vag. I made up my own cable to do this and got the software of the free internet. Meant to try it on a more standard immo setup on a golf or something to make sure it wasnt my cable or the software that was at fault but never got around to it. Kinda lost hope of ever getting the skc of the van although it has to be there somewhere. Locksmiths are a bit tight in releasing their full know how to the internet!! Good chance youll hit the same brick wall if you try to diy it dince its such a rare setup. Sorry for rant! Must actually try the cable on my mates mk iv golf. I was afraid before of locking out dmeones car but if it happens his it will be a for the best. Pile of scrap rolling about the place.

Its good to see they actually changed the law to make it illegal to clock cars.
Up to march last year it wasnt illegal to clock a car

hmmm, i have a similar Audi situation, age of car etc the temp gauge and fuel gauge over read by about 40 % , so the temp alarm goes off nearly all the time , then drops back to normal after a few minutes .

fuel is near emtpy when it reads just over half full.

car is not over heating , this has been checked .

its a known cluster issue .

might send it off to be fixed .

does nct fail on temp gauges / alarms ?

Did you change your temp Sensor?

Mine had that problem and i put in a new 20 euro Sensor and it sorted it. Little Green Sensor down the back of the engine that oil drips on i think.

Mine used to say it was overheating when the car was just started so its defo not overheating.

It will fail the NCT if theres the red alarm on the dash saying theres an engine Temp problem. I had to fix mine to pass a few year back.

Heres the 98 Version. Mine is different in the 00 but it looks roughly the same.

    Here again.

Edit - This is a tutorial on how to fix it with good pictures
