Working while on disability

I have a friend who's on disability allowance because she has a condition called HS and she's in and out of the hospital and quite bad a lot of the time. She's not able to work, but she does write and has wanted to publish a book for quite some time now. She's just worried about how it would affect her payment. She knows you have to get permission to work and you can only do certain jobs. But she also knows authors don't always make a lot and worries that going off her disability payment would mean she wouldn't have enough money to survive. Does anyone know how it would work exactly? My friend would love to know, because she's still very wary about it all. Thanks. :)
