Noise from VW Touran after long journey ?

    Dear Motors Forum,
My 2003 VW Touran has the habit of emitting a high pitched screech towards the end of long journeys. Just yesterday we drove from Galway to Dublin and nearing Dublin it started. IT tends to not happen on journeys less than an hour and sometime it takes several hours before it occurs. Yesterday it started possibly after driving over a few cats-eyes (weird).

Two good garages have looked for what is causing the issue but have not found it. In fact only last week someone from a big nearby VW garage drove it home to Arklow and it did not occur for him.

The noise seems to be coming from somewhere near the rear left wheel and it an almost constant high-pitched screech. Sometime I have gotten it to stop by either stopping and shaking the car or by driving over some good sized bumps/holes (but not always). The nose tends to stop if you slow down and then increase immediately you get up to speed again.

Our real problem is that if we are say in France (during the Summer) and it happens and it does not stop or we have to drive fast to get the ferry etc., that something may finally give and we will be in a spot of trouble.

In there anyone on this list who has any ideas what this might be ?.

    Regards,

    Niall

Hmm, difficult to even start to guess if several mechanics hasn't figured it out when they have the car.
Next time it happens stop and feel the metal on the wheels all around
    Are they differently hot?
