Just wondering does anyone know if I have to do a theory test again for a learner license to tow a car trailer, I have a full Irish car one, and looking at getting the trailer one. Main question is do i need to sit the theory or can I just fill in a learner form?

If you have a category B driving licence to drive a vehicle (car/jeep) you can tow a small trailer. If you want to tow a larger trailer you must have category BE on your licence.

I think he knows that.....that's why he's asking about the Theory Test.
The answer OP is Yes you do have to sit a theory test to add a new category to your licence.

    2nd last FAQ.

edit, OP if you have passed a theory test within the last 2 years that will be still valid.

If you've never done the theory test then you'll need to do one for the BE learner permit.

    https://www.ndls.ie/cars-and-trailers.html#how-do-i-obtain-a-car-and-trailer-licence
How do I obtain a car and trailer licence?
You must hold a current full driving licence in the category B (car).
You must first pass a driver theory test in the category BW (if not already passed to obtain a category B licence)
Apply for a learner Permit in category BE in an NDLS centre.
After passing a driving test in the car/jeep and trailer you can then apply for the category BE to be added to your full driving licence.

There is no BW category, that's a typo on the NDLS site

There is no full category BW but the driver theory test is BW denoting it covers cars and tractors. For example a 16yo looking to get a permit for the tractor must get the BW theory test.

If the OP has ever sat a car theory test and has never let his entitlements lapse for more than 10 years he can get the BE learner permit now without needing the BW theory test.
