I couldn't find the answer on the Kings Inns website but my understanding was that a barrister is prohibited from practicing in another profession or are the only prohibited where there is a conflict of interest?

Really? Would they be in large firms, how would they have completed their deviling?

I wasn't aware that it was common, I am aware of the reverse case, in other words, I know a guy that has accountancy & barrister qualifications and practices as a barrister. He trained in a Big 6 firm and then subsequently qualified as a barrister.

Sorry to repeat myself but how would he have managed the deviling?

Once a person has the BL qualification they can call them selves a barrister, many do so.

Not sure if that's correct, but in any case the person I have in mind is definitely, without question, a practising barrister. Not just someone who calls themselves barrister.

How do you mean 'managed'? Surely anyone can devil once they have found a master, have the relevant qualifications and are prepared to work for little or no pay for a year?

In terms of managing an accountancy practice, signing off audit reports etc while deviling at the same time?

I'm not personally aware of anyone that has done that, but equally not aware that it would be barred by regulations.

It is not necessary to Devil to to use the Title of Barrister, once you have completed your studies at King's Inns and "been called to the bar." you are a Barrister.

Barristers who wish to practice "go down" and must Devil in order to do so.

As already mentioned could describe himself as a barrister while practising as an accountant.

Even if the respective regulatory bodies allowed it, it would be very difficult to practice both as a barrister and an accountant.

During the approx 32 weeks of court sittings a barrister has to be on call for work.

If as an accountant he is spending a few weeks on an audit, he cannot suddenly slip away to a case which he expects to take only half an hour, but could turn into a three day hearing.

If a barrister is briefed in a criminal case, especially where imprisonment is a risk, he has to give it priority over all other commitments.

In short a barrister has a more unpredictable working week than an accountant
