It depends on budget but they say ping are forgiving clubs, in the driver they are anyway, g5, g10 etc all meant to be forgiving. Second hand is the way to go, you can find decent second hand sets which would suit you. Cavity back ( as opposed to muscle back or blades) and game improvement irons would be good, depending on your swing steel shafts too. There's a website golfbidder.co.uk which lists second hand clubs for sale, it's sterling but it gives you an idea what price they are selling for and so you can compare adverts to it to see of it's a fair price etc. hopefully others will add more but I definitely think second hand is the way to go. Quick look tells me for 180 you could have g2 irons and g5 driver and 3 and 5 wood. That leaves putter and a wedge. But then again I could be wrong on the ping g range so hopefully others can clarify, I'm just going on what I've been told myself before!

No problem at all, it's a great game and hobby! I'd also advise to get a few lessons, lessons at the start make a huge difference. I started off with ping i3 myself and found them a lovely iron to hit, infact still use the sand wedge in my bag, and I've seen guys using g5 / g10 drivers and saying they find it decent and forgiving. You can google any set you find to see what reviews they get regarding being forgiving. Likewise hybrids are a mixed bag, some love them and some struggle to hit them, but even with a driver, set of irons and a 5 wood and wedge and putter should get you around any course, and as you go on add to your set like I did.

About mid way down explains club types etc but its personal preference, best bet is to hit alot of them until you find a set you like.

I'd tip down to The Golf Studio in Celbridge, it sells mainly second hand clubs at good prices and they have a range where you can try them before buying.

The G range of Ping is there game improvement clubs, the I series being the better players range.

Honestly though, just hit everything until you find one that clicks, then don't look up any info on other clubs or what you should play unless your pro tells you to or you'll end up like me lol

The guy in Celbridge will take a look at your swing and tell you stiff or regular etc ( had a flight scope too if you want to pay). He is trying to sell clubs but he'd be fairly decent.

That would explain why alot of people are recommending the g range so, is the difference between the g5,10 ect just their upgrades? Ill need to take a day ans go find a set i like ill take a look into that shop thanks, if i get my clubs customised and then get lessons will i not ned to then get my clubs done again because my game will be adjusted?

With Ping I think it goes G5/G10/G15/G20/G25/G30 from oldest to newest.
Very little difference unless your going from a G5 to a G30 and even then your results could well be the same or worse with the newer gear.

You don't/shouldn't need custom fit clubs (unless your very tall or very short), and its unlikely your tempo or swing speed will change so much after lessons that your clubs will be completely wrong for you.

But if your getting lessons, ask your pro what kind of club/shaft he thinks will suit you. He should be able to give you a better recommendation as he probably knows what your swing will be like once you get going and start improving.
