    Quick question. If a SW Inspector calls to my house unannounced am I obliged to invite them in?

    One would certainly hope so - otherwise it's a fairly obvious loophole for those out to commit fraud against taxpayers. :(

    Yes you are. They're called surprise inspections for this very reason.

    Why would you not want him/her to come in?

    I never said I didn't want them in. He never asked if he could come in. Just gave me his card and asked me to come to the office the next day which I did. He then put in his report that he was unable to gain access to the property. I told them he hadn't asked to come in but he would have been more than welcome. She got a bit snotty that I hadn't invited him in. It really didn't occur to me that!

    If they're paying you a visit, they suspect something is up.


    I don't answer my door to anybody unless they've called in adavnce.

    CODE OF PRACTICE

    1. PURPOSE AND IDENTITY

    1.1 When visiting a customer or interviewing at a departmental office the Inspector, appointed under Section 250 of the Social Welfare (Consolidated) Act 2005, should identify himself/herself by name before the interview commences.

    1.2 The Inspector's Certificate of appointment should always be carried and produced to all persons being visited outside Departmental offices.

    1.3 The purpose and intent of the Inspector's interview/visit should be made clear at all times.

    1.4 Customers should be clearly advised of the purpose of documents they are asked to sign such as declarations on claim forms, authorisations for banks etc.

    1.5 Inspectors should ensure that customers are aware of their obligations to fully disclose their circumstances when making a claim and to notify subsequent changes which might affect payment...

    Calls by Social Welfare Inspectors to the homes of those putting in a claim for social assistance payments are commonplace. I.D., etc., will be supplied by Inspectors and visits are governed by a code of practice http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/SWI---Code-of-Practice-For-Social-Welfare-Inspectors.aspx
